Battlefield Tour: Canada in Flanders: The Canadian Corps First Attack, Mont Sorrel 2-13 June 1916
The Canadian Corps, now three divisions strong was just taken over by Lieutenant General Julian Byng and was holding the line east of Ypres from the hamlet of Hooge on the Menin Road to Hill 60. Sitting on the last ridge protecting Ypres, the 3rd Canadian Division was led by Major General Malcolm Mercer and held some of the most vital ground. On the 2nd of June 1916, Major General Mercer went forward to do a reconnaissance and observe the positions of the Canadian Mounted Rifles at Hill 62/Mont Sorrel when the Germans launched a sudden attack, shattering the line, killing Major General Mercer and crushing the Canadian Mounted Rifles. For two weeks the Canadians fought over the same ground and eventually won the battle, where no ground changed hands.
