Leaving a Gift in Your Will
-
What is a gift in a will?
A gift in a will (also called a charitable bequest) is a direction that, after your lifetime, part of your estate is given to a registered charity such as the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC).
It is one of the most thoughtful ways to support a cause that matters deeply to you. -
Why consider a gift in your will?
• It costs nothing today — your gift is made in the future
• You remain in full control — your family always comes first
• It creates a lasting legacy of care and support
• It can reduce taxes owed by your estate, leaving more for loved ones and charities
In Canada, charitable gifts made through a will can generate tax credits that may be applied against up to 100% of the estate’s net income in the year of death (and sometimes the year prior).

Common ways to leave a gift
You may choose the option that best fits your circumstances:
- A percentage of your estate (often called a residual gift)
- Example: 5% or 10% of what remains after other gifts are made
- A specific dollar amount
- Example: $10,000
- A gift of specific assets
- Such as securities, property, or other assets
- A percentage of your estate (often called a residual gift)

Suggested wording
Your lawyer will help draft the final wording, but the following is often helpful to share:
“I give to the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre, Charitable Registration Number 129175667 RR0001, ___% of the residue of my estate, to be used for its general charitable purposes.” -
Do I need a lawyer?
Yes. An Alberta estate lawyer will ensure your wishes are clear, legally valid, and easy for your executor to carry out.

Letting us know
You are not required to tell us if you include the Calgary MFRC in your will, but many people choose to do so.
This allows us to:
• Ensure correct legal naming
• Honour your wishes
• Thank you personally (anonymously, if you prefer)
