School Transition Portfolio

Moving is a big change, especially for Canadian Armed Forces families with school-aged children and youth. To help ease the transition, we recommend creating a School Transition Portfolio. This is a collection of key documents that support registration and helps schools understand your child’s educational history and learning needs.

Whether digital or physical, keep it updated and ready with:

  • Proof of age and address
  • Custody agreements (if applicable)
  • Academic records and immunization history
  • IEPs/ILPs or psychoeducational assessments
  • ESL/FSL or bilingual education records
  • Awards, volunteer hours, and extracurriculars

Older students can build a “brag file” with achievements and experiences. This is also a great addition for job, scholarship, and post-secondary applications.

If enrolling children in English-language education in Quebec or French-language education in another Province or Territory, parents’ school transcripts may also be required  to confirm eligibility.

Transitions can be tough, but preparation makes a big difference.
