Family Violence Advisory Team (FVAT)

Family violence includes any form of abuse, mistreatment, or behaviour used to control, harm, intimidate, or isolate another person. It can be physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, financial, or involve neglect. Its impact can affect safety, health, well-being and family relationships. 

The CAF is committed to promoting safe, respectful, and healthy relationships and preventing family violence. Whether you are seeking information, support for yourself, or resources to help someone else, assistance is available. 

The Family Violence Advisory Team (FVAT) provides psychoeducation, guidance, and other supports to CAF members, their families and the Chain of Command to help address concerns, strengthen awareness, and promote safe and healthy relationships. Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported. 

Family Violence Advisory Team (FVAT) Briefing 

Family violence touches individuals, families, and communities in complex and often hidden ways. This 90‑minute session offers a clear, practical introduction to understanding family violence—what it is, how it shows up, and why prevention matters. Participants will explore key concepts, including the continuum of intimate partner violence, while learning to recognize early warning signs and risk factors. 

With a strong focus on prevention, the session highlights evidence-informed strategies that promote safety, resilience, and healthy relationships. It also outlines available resources and supports, as well as relevant policies and frameworks that guide effective responses. 

Whether you’re new to the CAF, or a seasoned leader, this session provides foundational knowledge and actionable insights to help you recognize, respond to, and prevent family violence.

Command Teams are required, under DAOD 5044‑4, to complete a Family Violence Advisory Team (FVAT) briefing within 90 days of assuming command. This focused session equips leaders with essential knowledge to recognize signs of family violence, understand available supports, and apply relevant policies. 

Designed to strengthen leadership readiness and response, the briefing reinforces your role in promoting early identification, ensuring appropriate support, and upholding CAF policy obligations. Taking this briefing is a key step in fostering a safe, informed, and responsive command environment.
