About the youth session
This program offers an opportunity for up to 10 youth to participate in a mindfulness-based creative activity that supports positive mental health. The creative mindfulness activities, including forms of journaling, can ease stress and improve overall emotional regulation.
Junk journaling emphasizes creative self-expression rather than artistic skill, making it accessible and enjoyable for youth of all abilities. It can be particularly helpful for those experiencing grief or trauma by providing a safe, nonverbal way to explore and process difficult emotions. It is also well-suited for neurodivergent youth, including those with ADHD or autism, as it provides an open-ended, hands-on method for organizing thoughts and feelings without rigid rules.
The tactile process of selecting, cutting, and assembling materials encourages mindfulness and grounding in the present moment. This can help reduce intrusive thoughts and support a greater sense of calm, focus, and connection with oneself.
