Angie Daber-Roggie
Emergency Family Care Coordinator View BioAngie Daber-Roggie
Emergency Family Care Coordinator
Position: Emergency Family Care Coordinator
Tell us more about your role at the PMFRC and the programs you are involved in:
When parents are looking for a day care, they register with the Private Home Day Care program and we match them with local caregivers that can meet their child care requirements. The parents have an opportunity to meet with the caregivers and choose one that they feel comfortable with. We make sure that all of the paperwork is provided to the caregiver before the child starts in their care.
There is a screening process for all of the caregivers in our program and we make sure that every home meets the requirements set out by the Ministry of Education. There are Police Record Checks and Family and Children Services Checks for anyone living in the home that is over the age of 18. The fire inspector visits each home, as well as the Renfrew County District Health Unit or Preventative Medicine to do a health inspection. All of our care providers have Child Care Liability Insurance, First Aid & CPR, Safe Food Handling, Fire Extinguisher & Child Abuse Awareness training. The entire process takes approximately a month to complete; and then we are able to place children in the home day care.
We also provide support and training for our caregivers and our office does unannounced spot checks so we can ensure that caregivers are providing quality care to both military and civilian families.
We monitor our Emergency Child Care homes the same way we do for Private Home Day Care. There are two care providers on-call each month and we are currently recruiting new providers to join our team. If a family is in need of Emergency Child Care -- now called Emergency Family Care Assistance -- we work with the families to arrange care for them. We attend unit briefings to ensure Family Care Plans are filled out properly and we provide members with an Emergency Child Care kit to help them plan for emergency situations.
How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
I have worked with different programs at the PMFRC for over 18 years, and have been in my current position for the past 15 years. I am very passionate about my job and enjoy coming to work every day.
Tell me about your background (experience, education, etc.)?
I have worked in the Early Childhood Education field for over 25 years in various day care centres. I’m currently registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
I am easy-going, flexible and always willing to listen to families. I try my best to help them with whatever child care needs they may have.
What is your favorite part about working for the PMFRC?
My favorite part about working at the PMFRC is helping people, whether it is someone looking for information about Private Home Day Care, Emergency Child Care of just letting them know about the services we have to offer.
It is very rewarding when we find that “perfect match” for families; parents are able to go to work each day knowing that their children are happy and well cared for. As a mother of two boys, I know how stressful it can be to find quality child care, and how important it is to find a caregiver that is right for your child.
We have an amazing team of caregivers that work hard to keep the children engaged and have lots of fun while doing it. The PMFRC has so many programs to offer at the PMFRC and I think it’s important to promote them to the community.
What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
I have worked with several programs throughout the PMFRC. At one time I was the Home Visitor in this office.
My greatest accomplishment was being promoted to the Private Home Day Care/Emergency Child Care Supervisor fifteen years ago. It is very rewarding to be able to help people with their child care needs and be part of such an amazing team.
Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
I’m a valley girl, born and raised in Pembroke.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
Visit our locations or call and get information about the programs you are interested in. Lots of times people come in to meet with us about Private Home Day Care or Emergency Child Care and we end up giving them information about schools and other community resources they may need. That’s what we are here for!
What is your favorite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
I love spending time with my family and doing outdoor activities: camping, four wheeling, sliding, and snowmobiling.
Leave us with a few more words of wisdom – what is your favorite quote?

Community Engagement SpecialistName: Annie Beaudoin
Position: Community Engagement AdvisorTell us more about your role at the PMFRC and the programs that you are involved in.
The Community Engagement Advisor position is new at the PMFRC, and my main role is to network with community service providers to identify local community programs, services and activities that support the needs of CAF families and to connect the PMFRC with our community. Another part of my role is to do the translation for the agency.
How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
I have been with the PMFRC for over 10 years now in a lot of different roles, my last one been the Deployment Services Coordinator.
Tell me about your background (experience, education, etc.) I am a military veteran spouse (25 years), mom to 3 grown children and I love crafting! I graduated (a long time ago) from a CEGEP in Quebec City as a “Technicienne en travail social” (similar to the social service worker program here in Ontario). When we moved to Petawawa I stayed home with my children and opened a private home daycare with the PMFRC as well as being part of the emergency childcare program. Then, when my youngest started school, I got back in the job market and worked as an EA in one of the French schools for 7 years and then started working with the PMFRC.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
First you will get a smile then you will hear my big French accent!
What is your favourite part about working for the PMFRC?
The people I work with! Everyone is so dedicated in helping and supporting military families, bringing great skills and experiences to the table.
What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
Recently, as the Deployment Services Coordinator, the deployment team got to revamp the department and how we provide programs and services to our families, by offering a personalized and client focused approach with our Programs and Resources Catalogues. In a previous role, it was planning and organizing some of our big events like “Strength Beyond the Uniform”, “Home Heart Heroes”, “Children Coin Ceremony” and “The Summer Block Party”. They were a lot of work, but the rewards are amazing. Honouring military families is my passion here at the PMFRC!
Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa?
How long have you lived here? I am from Quebec City and lived there until I met my (now) husband at 17 years old and began moving around Canada. We have been in Petawawa for 20 years now (with some IR postings mixed in there). After 25 years, my husband retired, and we decided to stay here as our forever home since we love it so much.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
Do not try to do this military life alone! Reach out, develop your network, and stay connected with us! As we like to say, no door is the wrong door to ask for help and we are here to help and support you!
What is your favourite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter?
The summer? Water is my thing, and we are blessed with great beaches here! Kayaking, boating or just being a beach bum is wonderful. In the winter I hide and craft!
Leave us with a few words of wisdom -- what is your favourite quote? “Fake it until you make it!” because you will definitely make it!! Stay strong, stay connected and enjoy the ride! -

Executive Director View BioDerek de Ruiter
Executive DirectorTell us more about your role at the PMFRC and the programs that you are involved in.
I was recently appointed as the Executive Director of the PMFRC after being the Business Manager and Deputy Director for the last five years. I am excited to take on this new and challenging role and hope that I can help guide the PMRC to continue to support Military Families to the best of our abilities. My role as the Executive director is to guide the organization and support our staff based on the needs of our Military Families and within the guidelines of our funding partners. I look forward to working with our community partners as well as building new relationships in my new role.
How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
I have worked at the PMFRC for 5 years, starting as the Business Manager and moving to the Deputy Director roughly 2 years ago.
Tell me about your background (experience, education, etc.)
I went to school in North Bay Ontario at Nipissing University where I completed a 4 year Honours Business Administration Degree. From there I moved all over Ontario from Ottawa to Belleville, to Milton, to Cambridge before moving back to Petawawa. I spent most of my career in management in the Insurance Industry working in various roles.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
I hope they feel I am approachable and accommodating. I am the type of person who likes to gather as much information as possible before making a decision, so I will typically listen and ask questions throughout a conversation.
What is your favourite part about working for the PMFRC?
In my role every day is different. One day I can be planning the budget for the PMFRC and the next I can be trying to help fix someone’s computer! I enjoy that every day is busy and keeps me on my toes. No two days are the same and that keeps work interesting!
What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
It is hard to pick a specific accomplishment as there is so much new happening every day. I think we are always working on new projects and adapting to changes now more than ever. I would say our response to COVID-19, although very challenging, has been a success that the PMFRC should be very proud of. We are also currently going through a lot of changes in Children’s Services with the new CWELCC program, moving to a Systems Service Manager in Employment Services, and MFS Modernization, to name a few changes that I am very proud of how our staff has managed.
Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
I was born and raised in Petawawa as both my parents were locals. I went away to school when I was 18 and always said I would never come back! Nineteen years later, after having two children, my family made the choice to move back to be closer to family. We have been back living in Petawawa for nine years now!
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
It is a beautiful area that has changed a lot since I lived here as a child! Moving back from a bigger city I thought there would be fewer things to do with my children and less opportunities for them to play organized sports and programs, but I was quite surprised how wrong I was. There always seems to be something going on and something to do. And the short drive to Ottawa gives you access to anything that you may be missing.
What is your favourite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
With two young boys, in the winter you will find me at the rink coaching, reffing, or playing hockey myself! In the summer we are out playing soccer or baseball, or just enjoying the outdoors. If the weather outside is not cooperating, we will be up at Dundonald Hall!
Leave us with a few words of wisdom -- what is your favourite quote?
I don’t have a favourite quote per se, but someone told me something a long time ago that has stuck with me: Always give your best effort in everything you do no matter if it is something you enjoy or not, or something you are good at or struggle with. There are always things we enjoy doing and things we may not enjoy at all, but we should always do the best we can regardless of the situation. Not an easy thing to do but something I often think about when faced with a difficult task. -

What is your favourite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
My family and I are huge outdoor enthusiasts and enjoy spending time in nature; and Petawawa sure does not disappoint.
Although I could do without the length of the winters here, I do love taking walks through the forests, and skating on the outdoor trail with my family.

Coordinator - Employment Services
Position: Employment Services Coordinator
Tell us more about your role at the PMFRC and the programs that you are involved in.
I am the Employment Services Coordinator here at the PMFRC. Our offices in Petawawa and Deep River are open to all members of the public and we meet with individuals and groups to support them in their job search and help them to access the programs and services that are available through Employment Ontario. I support a team that provides one-on-one coaching, facilitates workshops, attends events, meets with employers and collaborates with other local organizations and community resources.
How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
I began working with the PMFRC as an Employment Coach at the end of June 2018 and was promoted to Employment Services Coordinator in August 2022.
Tell me about your background (experience, education, etc.)
I grew up in Laurentian Valley and then moved to Southern Ontario to get my BA in Psychology and English. I had planned to be a teacher, but while in school I realized that teaching would not be for me. I worked in developmental services, daycares, agriculture, retail and sales before moving into a position as an Employment Coach in 2014.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
I’m the oldest of six kids and have three of my own, so I tend to be a pretty practical and encouraging person. I’ve struggled with unemployment too, so I understand how difficult it can be. Just walking through the door is a huge first step, so my team works hard to assist everyone to find the help, resources and referrals they need. We aim to give our clients hope for the future and some tangible things to work on to help them reach their goals.
What is your favourite part about working for the PMFRC?
The atmosphere at PMFRC Employment Services is collaborative, educational and fun, and the team gets along amazingly well. Helping jobseekers connect with meaningful opportunities is really rewarding work. I also love how being a part of the PMFRC has opened my eyes to the resources that are available to our military families, and the active and social Petawawa community.
What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
Like many of us, I’m sure; the past three years have been some of the hardest and strangest ones of my lifetime. It’s also been hard on my team and the people we help. I’m very proud of the communication and collaboration this team has demonstrated and the level of service that we have provided to our community, even while things have been tough for all. We have seen a lot of positive results from these efforts and I’m proud of this team.
Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
My grandparents emigrated from the Netherlands to the Ottawa Valley and I grew up in Alice Township (now Laurentian Valley) just outside of Pembroke. After attending university, I moved back to the area to be closer to family while my husband attended Algonquin College in Pembroke. We both work in Renfrew County and are raising our three kids in the house my grandparents built in the 50s.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
It’s surprising how much there is to do in the Petawawa area! Join the local social media groups, attend some of the many events, and ask people about options for sports and activities for your kids. The community here is a welcoming one, and the options for employment and recreation are endless.
What is your favourite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
I’m definitely more of a fall/summer person and LOVE to camp. We try to take at least one big camping trip a year to a provincial park. My mom has some property that we’ve cleared so we also spend a lot of time there in good weather. We play badminton, bocce, board games and card games, invite family and friends, ride bikes and 4-wheelers, and spend a lot of time swatting mosquitos by camp fires.

I love that we live so close to beaches, hiking trails and rentals for canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding. We also have a boat, so being able to dock it so close to hit the water is amazing! Winters are also fun as you can rent snowshoes and sled down some of the bigger hills in the area. We also like to skate the outdoor trails and rinks locally.

Programs Manager
Position: Programs Manager
Tell us more about your role at the PMFRC and the programs that you are involved in.
As the Programs Manager I have the privilege of working with a talented team that supports families with the unique challenges that come with Military family life. This includes: relocations, deployments, special needs, volunteer services, second language and much more. Our team also includes the marketing department that gets the word out about all of exciting things that are happening at the PMFRC each week.
How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
I have been with the PMFRC since August 2015.
I worked as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the first four years. That role gave me the opportunity to work with every department at the PMFRC, and to get to know more about the community. I really loved that job, so the decision to take on a new role was not an easy one.
I have been in my role as Programs Manager since 2019 – but even that has changed so much due to COVID, new technologies and a new strategic mandate. Luckily, I work with an amazing team that impresses me every day with their knowledge, new ideas and commitment to serving families.
Tell me about your background (experience, education, etc.)
I have a Journalism degree from Carleton University in Ottawa. After graduating I spent eleven years working in corporate communications and community relations for a large telecommunications company.
I put my communications career on hold when my second daughter was born. I enjoyed my job, but after a few years of trying to juggle work, family and a career I decided to step away to become a stay-at- home mom. Over the next ten years, I taught yoga and fitness, did some volunteer work, went back to school and was a part-time office manager.
My family moved to Petawawa in 2014. By then my girls were older so when my dream job popped up (working in marketing at the PMFRC), I knew it was time to take that leap.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
Lots of questions.
I love to meet new people and to find out more about where they are from and what they do. It drives my husband crazy – and sometimes I get ‘that look’ when I have asked one too many questions.
I truly believe that everyone we meet has something to teach us – it is up to us to have an open mind, and to take the time to listen to what they have to say.
What is your favourite part about working for the PMFRC?
I like the fact my job is busy, and that every day is different.
Two years ago, the PMFRC launched a podcast called Military Family Life (check it out). As one of the co-hosts I have had the opportunity to meet some great people and hear their stories. It was the perfect challenge for me because it combines my background in journalism and my love of questions.
Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
I was born in Montreal, but I grew up in Ottawa. My husband was posted to Petawawa in 2014. It was supposed to be a two-year posting, but the military had other plans.
Recently my husband retired after 37 years in the Military, but over the last nine years Petawawa has become our home so we are staying put.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
Get out, see things, and meet people. Petawawa has so much to offer but you have to be willing to take that first step and find out.
What is your favourite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
In the summer, my husband and I like hiking and spending time out on the river in our boat. I am not a winter person, so I spend most of the time shivering and wishing for summer to come back.
In terms of hobbies, I love reading, blacksmithing and genealogy research.

Before working with the PMFRC I worked in the financial industry, but something was missing, and it didn’t feel fulfilling, so I decided to make a career change and applied to an opening with the PMFRC and as they say the rest is history. After only a short few months at the PMFRC I knew I had made the right choice and decided to work towards completing my diploma in Early Childhood Education while working full-time at Lil’ Troopers South. Some days are hectic, and every day is different but I am enjoying working with the children every day.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
Bobbi: I am approachable and energetic, but laid back and you will almost always find me in good spirits. Like everyone here at Lil’ Troopers South I enjoy creating a positive work and learning environment for fellow staff and the children we serve.
What is your favourite part about working for the PMFRC?
Ryan: I love having the opportunity to provide a sense of predictability and stability for our Military families. In a hectic world that is always changing, they can take comfort in knowing that their children are being cared for in a safe and enriching environment.
What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
Bobbi: I have enjoyed many experiences working with children daily, every day is different. The most rewarding accomplishment so far has been working with my current resource child and watching how far he has come and how much he has grown since I started with him two years ago. He has accomplished so much and looking back to the beginning days when he started in our room and how much he has overcome and excelled in, it is amazing to watch and be a part of his successes.
Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
Ryan: I was born and raised in Ottawa, but have also had the opportunity to live in a few other cities throughout Ontario, finally settling down just down the road in Pembroke roughly 12 years ago as my wife and I were both able to find suitable work in our respective fields.
Bobbi: I am originally from a small town outside of Ottawa, called Carp. It’s not so small anymore as it has grown exponentially like everywhere has. I graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in 2004, in 2005 my dad sold our house to downsize and moved to Cobden and I decided to come along to be closer and help him out. I moved from Cobden to Pembroke a year later and I completed two diploma’s through Algonquin College in the Ottawa Valley and decided to settle down and make Pembroke my new home base. I have lived here since 2006 and now count the Ottawa Valley as my second home. I am a big outdoor person and I love living here with all the outdoor amenities the valley offers.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
Ryan: Embrace the peacefulness of this beautiful area. Get out and explore the wonderful scenery, and enjoy all the joys of small(ish) town living away from the hecticness of the “big city”.
Bobbi: The Ottawa Valley is a wonderful place to live and raise children. I enjoy telling new families about the programs the PMFRC offers to families both civilian and Military as well as the many facilities, farms, and stuff to do in the Ottawa Valley. There is so much to explore and being in a new place, new school, new house can be stressful so if I can help ease the burden even a little by getting them in touch with the right people that can help them, I will do just that.
What is your favourite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
Bobbi: I am a big country girl. I love being out in nature doing anything and everything. I enjoy gardening, hiking with my big Berner and my three children, and nature walks to find treasures to craft with. In the summer we regularly explore our many lakes in the area and in the winter we enjoy skating and snowshoeing on the trails as well as the many vendor and craft shows our area offers.
Leave us with a few words of wisdom -- what is your favourite quote?
Ryan: “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll aways get what you’ve always got” – Albert Einstein
Bobbi: “It is not what is poured into a child, but what is planted, that counts.” -E.P. Bertin -

Allison: My role of being the Head Educator of a Toddler Program within the Agency consists of creating and implementing fun and educational activities for the children that promote learning and skill-building while they play and explore and have the best time ever in the program. We always build positive relationships with the children in the program as well as the families to be able to support the families and help the children learn and grow at their own speed. Our activities are exciting and provide optimum skill-building, while the children just think they are playing with their friends all day long. Our room is set up in a calm and relaxing manner with lots of natural light to help the children explore without being overstimulated by the bright daycare lighting and we believe that this makes a big difference in how the children play and engage in activities as well as with one another in the room. The staff along with the children learn something new everyday and it is so wonderful and rewarding to be able to experience all of this with the children on a day-to-day basis, celebrating their milestones with them and their families. This job is so rewarding in so many ways.
How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
Allison has been with the Agency for 9 years; 10 coming in September 2024.
Sonia has been with the Agency for just over 1 year.

Sonia: You will be greeted with a friendly smile, a hard worker and someone who is genuinely kind.
Nicole: She always greets you with a hello and a soft smile, making you feel warm and welcome anytime you walk into the daycare.
What is your favourite part about working for the PMFRC?
Allison: My favourite part about working for the PMFRC is getting to see the smiling happy faces on the children as they run into our room ready to play and take on the day, I get to do what I love every day! What could be better than that.
Sonia: I love watching the children grow and learn everyday, learning new skills and getting to be apart of that, growing as an Educator and a person each day as I get to watch the children grow and explore with each other.
Nicole: I enjoy working with a great group of Educators where I get to be part of scaffolding children’s learning and watch how different each and every day unfolds.
What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
Allison: My proudest moment is watching the children master skills that they have been working so hard at learning. Watching the children successfully potty train. Talking more and more each day, creating new relationships with the other children they play and explore with everyday and watching them grow as little people is so rewarding and it makes me so proud to be apart of that each and everyday.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
Allison: Petawawa is small but that’s what makes it such a great community to raise a family in, we have so much to offer and because it is a smaller community everything is so much more personalized and relationships formed are so much closer than that of a larger city.
What is your favourite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
Allison: I love being outside in the summer with my children exploring what Petawawa has to offer each and every day, there is so much to see and do. In the Winter we love to go sliding and skating and explore the snowy areas.
Sonia: I really like to take my dog for walks in different areas of Petawawa and explore different walking trails and areas with my family.

We set up fun activities that help children learn social skills, language skills, pre math skills, letters, colours, and shapes to name a few. Azusa: It has been just one year since I started.
Cheri: Almost 14 years.

Louise Anderson
Veteran Family Program Coordinator View BioLouise Anderson
Veteran Family Program Coordinator
Position: Veteran Family Program Coordinator
Tell us more about your role at the PMFRC and the programs that you are involved in.
The Veteran Family Program supports medically releasing members as well as Veterans who have medically released as well as their families in their transition to civilian life.
As Coordinator, I provide clients with information and referrals to help them access the programs and services they need. I also facilitate workshops that help clients to develop a transition plan, introduce them to the Veteran Family Journal and teach them how to use that tool.
As each of my clients will have unique experiences and needs, my role varies from person to person.
How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
I have been with the PMFRC since the summer of 2002. I started as a part-time employment counsellor and within a few months moved to full-time. From there I became the Employment Service Coordinator and finally the Veteran Family Program Coordinator. Throughout my time with the PMFRC, I have been helping clients – both Military and civilian – to deal with transitions.
Tell me about your background (experience, education, etc.)?
My dad was in the Military and I was a Military spouse, so I understand this lifestyle – the benefits and the challenges.
After moving to Petawawa I decided to go back to college, and completed the Social Service Worker program in the spring of 2002. I started working for the PMFRC a couple of months later and have been here ever since.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
The VFP is designed to adapt to individual needs, so my first meeting with a client will be a discussion about how best I can support them and their family.
What is your favourite part about working for the PMFRC?
My favourite part is the collaborative relationship I have with my colleagues because it allows me to help my clients more fully. We are a wonderfully eclectic team with a variety of experience in various areas. If I don’t know something, someone on the team will.
Where you from and what are brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
I am a Military child, so I am from nowhere and everywhere.
I was born in Quebec City and then moved to Calgary. From there we went to Summerside PEI, then Greenwood, NS. From Greenwood we moved to Metz, France then to Senneterre, QC, Lac St. Denis then Greenwood, NS again. I married a Military member in Greenwood and off we went to Baden, Germany then to Belleville, ON and finally here to Petawawa.
I have lived Petawawa since 1999.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
Embrace it. Petawawa can be a fabulous posting.
In the warm months we have beaches and walking trails, camp grounds, country fairs, outdoor concerts, farmer’s markets and much more. In the winter there is skiing, snow shoeing, sledding, skating, hockey and a so much more.
Petawawa is rich in natural beauty, and is fairly close to larger centres such as Ottawa and North Bay. As with all smaller locations, there are some limits to services and amenities that are available, but don’t let that define your experience.
Every posting is an opportunity to learn, grow and meet new people.
What is your favorite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
I love the closeness to nature – the trees, the walking trails, the beaches, the wildlife. I am not fond of the winter, so my favorite thing do is stay inside, where it is warm and cozy. In the summer, I like just being outside, walking or working in the yard. The sun is my “quicker picker upper” – I get energy from it and am happy when it is shining.
Leave us with a few more words of wisdom – what is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is: “Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.” I don’t know who said it, or if it is a paraphrase of an original similar quote, but when I saw it years ago, it stuck with me. -

Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
I was born and raised in a small farming community in Renfrew County. I am very close to my family and always wanted to stay in the area. I now reside outside of Pembroke with my husband and three sons who are 2, 4 and 6.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
Petawawa has lots of opportunities for people looking to get out and enjoy the outdoors any season and while it may take some time to get used to it, Petawawa has a lot to offer as a small town.
What is your favorite thing about living in the area? What is your favorite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
I love being outside with my family in the summer whether it is swimming, camping, four wheeling or just enjoying being outside with my kids. In the spring I make maple syrup with family and extended family. In the winter you will find me skating, sliding, binge watching Netflix or at the hockey arena watching my son play hockey.

Position: Supervisor at Lil’ Troopers North
Tell us more about your role at the PMFRC and the programs that you are involved in.
When Lil’ Troopers South first opened in September 2013, I was hired as Head Educator and Designate. I spent two amazing years in the preschool room and gained an in-depth knowledge of the agency and the military families we support.
From there, I moved to the Before and After School program at Valour. I was Supervisor for a year, and worked with an educator to open and run the program
Recently, I became the Supervisor at Lil’ Troopers North. I am excited to start this new chapter in my career, to get to know our military families, and to be a part of the amazing LTN team.
How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
This coming July, I will have been working at the PMFRC for four years.
Tell me about your background
I studied Early Childhood Education at Seneca College in Toronto, and have been working as a Registered Early Childhood Educator for almost 8 years.
I started my career as an ECE in toddler, preschool and school-age programs in different centres around the GTA and Toronto. During that time, I learned how to support children and to help them reach their goals while in my care.
I moved here in 2013 when my husband was posted to Garrison Petawawa.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
People can expect to see my big smile and LOUD personality.
What is your favorite part about working for the PMFRC?
My favourite part is being able to support our military community. As a military spouse myself, I understand how important the PMFRC is for families.
I enjoy meeting the new families, volunteers and staff that come into our programs and hearing about their experiences.
What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
I was proud to be part of the team that opened Lil’ Troopers South. It was an exciting time to be able to be with that team and work together on making the program a part of the community.
At the moment, my greatest accomplishment would be becoming the Supervisor at Lil’ Troopers North. I am very proud the Agency has given me this opportunity to support, and provide my knowledge and experience, to the staff and families at LTN.
Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
I was born and raised in Toronto, and am very proud to be first generation Portuguese Canadian. My husband was posted to Petawawa, so I guess I had to follow him. This is our first posting together as a family, and we have been here for four years.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
It seems like a small community, but once you start getting involved in all of the fun activities in the area you realize how big it is and how amazing the people here are. Remember, most of us have been in your shoes at one point in our lives, so don’t be scared to ask for help.
What is your favorite thing about living in the area? What is your favorite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
There are so many things to do in the summer, I love going swimming at Petawawa Point and going on walks through all the different trails with my family. We love going on drives to Algonquin Park and seeing all the nature that you don’t see in Toronto. We still haven’t seen a bear yet!
In the winter we go skating, snowshoeing and tubing. The community offers so many great activities to do with your family and it’s still close enough to the city for when you need some city-time.

Tell me about your background (experience, education, etc.)?
I’m a Registered Early Childhood Educator with a background in special needs and a focus on the Montessori and High Scope Curriculums.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
As a former military spouse, I understand what it is like to be posted to a new community and to struggle to find child care.
I want families to feel free to approach me with their questions and concerns. Our team is always willing to think outside the box to come up with unique solutions for families, and I am happy to provide other resources and information if I can.
I am also committed to following through to make sure that your child’s needs are being met.
What is your favorite part about working for the PMFRC?
There are many reasons I enjoy working at the PMFRC.
I love being able to work with a great team of professionals. Every one of them is committed to the families and children that we serve. We want parents to feel confident when they leave children with us, knowing that their children are being well cared for.
I also like that the PMFRC challenges us to grow; we are professional learners encouraged to improve ourselves on a daily basis. This emphasis on development helps us to provide families with programs and support that are based on the most up-to-date thinking and research.
What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
My greatest accomplishments would have to be the opening of the two centre-based day cares: Lil’ Troopers North and Lil’ Troopers South.
I am also proud when I see our military families becoming a true part of this community.

I’m originally from Mattawa, Ontario and moved to Petawawa when my husband was posted here.

What is your favorite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? Thesummer?
I love that Petawawa is so family-orientated; there is a wide variety of family and children’s activities to participate in. It has a great deal of natural beauty and lots of outdoor activities. My winters are usually spent sitting in cold rinks all across Renfrew County watching my son play hockey. I absolutely love the heat in the summer.
Leave us with a few more words of wisdom – what is your favorite quote?
Within any military community the one constant is change. My favorite quote during hectic transition times is: “If nothing changed there would be no butterflies”- (Walt Disney). -

Information Services - Receptionist
Position: Information Services - Receptionist
Tell us more about your role at the PMFRC and the programs that you are involved in.
As a receptionist at the PMFRC, I am usually the first face you would see at The Family Wellness Centre. My job entails supporting the staff in the building with any administration type tasks they may need done, as well as being the main contact to talk to when you call or come in. I direct calls, answer questions, provide information, and help anyone who may need it. I am involved (when I can be) as a volunteer, and I am also a new member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JSHC).
How long have you worked for the PMFRC?
I began working for the PMFRC in September 2022, however, I have been a volunteer since January 2019.
Tell me about your background (experience, education, etc.)
I have an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a Certificate in Theatre Arts from Laurentian University, a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults from George Brown College, a completed apprenticeship as an Information Technology – Contact Centre Customer Service Agent, and a Diploma in Office Administration – General from Algonquin College. I am currently working towards a Diploma in Office Administration – Executive and will be following that up with qualifications in Human Resources Management, Community and Social Services Management, Occupational Health, Safety, and Wellness, and Accommodation and Human Rights.
What can people expect to see when they first meet you?
When you first come into the PMFRC Family Wellness Centre, you will be greeted with a big, friendly “hello.” I have created quite the arts area for all ages. We have many different colouring books and pages available for you, and if you really want to, we can put your art up on our Art Gallery for everyone to see!
What is your favourite part about working for the PMFRC?
I would have to say that my favourite thing is seeing all the children’s smiling faces when they see all the colouring options I have for them. It warms my heart.
What is your greatest accomplishment or proudest moment working for the PMFRC?
My proudest moment as a PMFRC employee would have to be the first time I really got to see the impact of the work done by our fabulous counselors. Being able to see how a client’s demeanor can change from when they come in to when they leave, and seeing connections grow and/or get stronger. It really is amazing.
Where are you from and what brought you to Petawawa? How long have you lived here?
I have actually spent most of my life here. I am from Sault Sainte Marie, ON, but I moved to Pembroke in 1991 when my father got a civilian engineer job on the Base. I grew up in Pembroke, moved to Sudbury for school, then to Mississauga for a couple of years before coming back to Pembroke. After my spouse joined the military, we decided it would make more sense for us to move up to Petawawa.
What advice do you have for families transitioning to Petawawa?
Be open to new experiences. Living in the Ottawa Valley is not like living in larger centres. Certainly, you can drive to Ottawa to do more than what is available here, but with a little imagination, this area can be very entertaining.
What is your favourite thing about living in the area? What is your favourite thing to do in the winter? The summer?
I love all the green spaces. As an avid outdoorsperson, I have the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the bush with my spouse and kids (especially at hunting season) or going fishing on the Ottawa River or one of the many smaller lakes within the Ottawa Valley. I can’t pick just one favourite thing to do in a season because I am doing this year-round.
Leave us with a few words of wisdom -- what is your favourite quote?
That would be from my grandmother. She always told me to “learn something new every day and you will never be bored or waste away.” This has driven me into a life full of learning!
