Building a Resume

Your resume is about you and your experience. There is no one way to write a resume, but there are some guidelines to help you build a strong base.

Important Items to Remember

Format:

  • Clean & Professional
  • Plain language
  • 1-2 pages
  • Simple font & readable size (eg. Arial or Times New Roman 10-12)

Sample of relevant information to include:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Your education and training
  • Languages spoken

Your relevant experience including:

  • Professional profile/ overview “about me”
  • 1-2 lines about where you’ve been and where you want to go (enough that people keep reading!)
  • Where you worked
  • When you worked there
  • Your title
  • What you actually did / accomplishments

Content:

  • Be specific, and be detailed
  • Talk about what you did and what you accomplished
  • Read and review job postings
  • Echo the wording of the posting in your resume
  • Save multiple resume versions
  • Try adding tags or comments for your own understanding
