Nancy Szastkiw

Nancy Szastkiw knows that sometimes people need to talk about what’s going on with them.

An Honour to Listen: Meet MFRC Staff Member, Nancy Szastkiw, RCC, RSW

Whether offering a supportive ear to a military member returning home from a deployment or providing resources to families adjusting to military life, Nancy has made a career out of her ability to listen. Holding both the Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and Registered Social Worker (RSW) designations in BC, she works with individuals, couples and groups, and specializes in trauma support and traumatic event response.

In her MFRC role as Family Liaison Officer (FLO), Nancy partners with local Transition Centre staff to support the families of ill and injured CAF members as the member works toward returning to duty or transitioning from military to civilian life. In this role, she also provides special care and attention to the families of the fallen with counselling and programs on grief and loss.

Additionally, Nancy works with the families of currently serving CAF members. She runs programs on self-care and communication and also provides counselling for individuals and couples.

“Sometimes people need a place to land—to talk about what’s going on with them.  It’s an honour to listen.”

Outside of her work with the MFRC, Nancy is a Disaster Psychosocial Services field coordinator through Health Emergency Management BC, deployed to disasters such as fires and floods throughout BC providing emotional support to those impacted by fires and floods, and she facilitates Psychological First Aid training for community organizations. Nancy also teaches an online course on relationship building through Simon Fraser University in the First Responders Trauma Prevention and Recovery Certificate Program.
