Swimmer 7 to 12 years old
Swimmer 1
These beginning swimmers will become comfortable jumping into the water with and without a personal flotation device (PFD). They will learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They will practice floating, gliding and kicking to move through the water on their front and back.
Swimmer 2
These more advanced beginners will jump into deeper water and learn not to worry about falling into the water on their side while wearing a PFD. They will be able to swim in place without floating aids, learn the simultaneous spin kick, as well as swim 10m on their stomach and back. They will also have an introduction to interval training for alternating kicks (4 x 5m).
Swimmer 3
These young swimmers will do dives, front rolls in the water and backstrokes. They will practice the front crawl and back crawl for 15m, as well as 10m with the simultaneous rotational kick. Interval training for the alternating kick will increase to 4 x 15m.
Swimmer 4
These intermediate swimmers will swim 5m underwater and swim lengths in the front crawl, back crawl, simultaneous spin kick and breaststroke, including the breaststroke breath. Their latest feat includes demonstrating the Canadian Swim to Survive Standard. To top it off, they will perform 25m front crawl sprints and 4 x 25m front and back crawl interval training.
Swimmer 5
These swimmers will master flush dives, cluster (ball) jumps, alternate kicking and backward somersaults in the water. They will improve their 50m crawl and backstroke and 25m breaststroke. They will then increase the pace with 25m sprints and two interval training drills: 4 x 50m crawl or backstroke, and 4 x 15m breaststroke.
Swimmer 6
These advanced swimmers will be challenged with sophisticated aquatic skills such as jumping jacks, compact jumps, and rescue kicks such as the alternate spin kick and scissor kick. They will develop strength and power with headstroke sprints over 25m. They will swim lengths easily in the front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. They will be able to perform 300m workouts.

Youth Lifesaving Program (8 to 12 years old)
The Youth Lifesaving Program offers three levels of progression through the Junior Lifeguard Program and the Bronze Star.
With the transition to the Lifesaving Society's Swim for Life program, the Junior Lifeguard levels now continue to build on the skills of the swimmer levels and develop lifesaving and first aid skills. For more information on the different levels, visit the Lifesaving Society's website by following the link below: Junior Lifeguard (Swimmer 7 to 9) / Bronze Star (Swimmer 10).
Junior Lifeguard : SWIM PATROL | Société de sauvetage du Québec
Bronze Star : Bronze levels | Société de sauvetage du Québec
Swimmer 7 - Junior Lifeguard
This is an effort-based approach that allows you to develop endurance and effective swimming techniques while having fun. You'll learn how to perform a primary examination of a conscious victim, communicate effectively with pre-hospital emergency services, perform a visual scan of an aquatic facility and effectively initiate rescue assistance in an emergency situation.
Swimmer 8 - Junior Lifeguard
In addition to improving your swimming skills, you will learn to perform a primary examination of an unconscious victim, provide care to a victim in shock, treat a conscious victim who is choking, and perform a non-contact rescue using a floating object.
Swimmer 9 - Junior Lifeguard Expert
Now you can perfect your swimming techniques and develop your lifesaving and first aid skills. By the end of this course, you'll know how to rescue a tired or non-swimming victim, treat a broken bone or injured joint, and care for a victim who is having difficulty breathing because of a severe allergy or asthma attack.
Swimmer 10 - Bronze Star
The Bronze Star is the first Bronze level certification. It introduces you to lifesaving by teaching you how to solve problems and make decisions as an individual and as part of a team. You will learn how to perform resuscitation on a victim who has stopped breathing and develop the lifesaving skills necessary to become your own rescuer.
