Invest in yourself: Nutrition, Finances
In the spirit of nutrition month, the Mental Health Team at MFS-NCR highlights the importance of mindful eating. The purpose of this article is to strengthen knowledge about mind and body connection as well as the importance of slowing down for your overall wellbeing. This is not intended to replace traditional treatments for clinical eating disorders or weight loss strategies.
The practice of Mindfulness is a topic that is becoming more relevant and discussed more frequently. Mindfulness is an intentional focus on one’s thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations in the present moment.
Did you know that mindfulness can also be practiced when eating? Mindful eating focuses on the experiences, thoughts and feelings about food, awareness of the food we are eating without judgment and how the sensation of food relates to our bodies.
- Eating mindlessly: eating in your car while driving, eating in front of your computer at work, or eating in front of a television show. Mindless eating (also referred to as distracted eating) can perpetuate the fast paced, anxiety focused way of being.
- Mindful eating: noticing how the food looks, tastes, smells, and feels as we eat, how our bodies feel after eating, and what foods we are consuming.
Next time you are eating or enjoying your morning coffee, we encourage you to savour the moment by slowing down and being present.
