Who qualifies for these programs?
All Strengthening the Forces programs and workshops are open to military personnel (Reg and Res Force), retired military personnel AND their spouses. Where space and resources allow, DND and NPF civilian employees are welcome to participate.

The Essential Nutrition Course (TENC)   


The Essential Nutrition Course (TENC)

(one day, 0830-1600hrs) 



This course is appropriate for adults who wish to learn and practice healthy eating habits. This course was developed by Registered Dietitians in collaboration with a public health medicine specialist physician. After this course, you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to feel comfortable implementing the learning outcomes below.

After this course you will be able to:

1. Understand the role of nutrition in the promotion of health and prevention of chronic disease

2. Build a healthy plate

3. Use the Nutrition Facts table when making food decisions

4. Identify various ways to meal plan 

5. Manage food costs

6. Implement mindful eating strategies

R.E.S2E.T. (0830 - 1600hrs)


R.E.S2E.T aligns with the CAF BALANCE Strategy and other Operational Readiness initiatives to provide a skill-based program aimed at improving wellness at an individual, unit, family and/or command level. Utilizing adult learning tools, the goal is to provide a specific total health strategy to support participants focused on obtaining optimal BALANCE and performance.  

R.E.S2E.T introduces participants to the following six topics:

1. Resilience

2. Eating Healthy

3. Stress

4. Sleep/Rest

5. Exercise Selection or Exercises for Mental Fitness

6. Taking Action/Goal Setting


Social Wellness


Respect in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) 

(one day, 0800-1600 hrs) 

TAKE A STAND AGAINST SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

This one-day interactive workshop uses scenarios, discussions and small group practical activities to help CAF members develop and practice skills to recognize, respond, and prevent sexual misconduct as well as support those affected by it.


Mental Fitness & Suicide Awareness (MFSA) 

(one day, 0800-1600 hrs)

This course is MITE coded. The purpose of MFSA is to prepare personnel in supervisor roles to promote mental fitness and to lessen the incidence of mental health injuries including deliberate self-harm and suicide, within the military community. Participants will discuss Mental Fitness and learn an early suicide intervention model. Although this is a supervisor course, course is open and appropriate for all ranks, adult family members and NPF/DND Civilian Employees. 



Managing Angry Moments 

(must attend both days, 0830-1600 hrs)

MAM is an interactive program designed to help increase personal performance by identifying successful coping strategies in anger–generating situations and provide opportunities to learn and practice new skills. Discussions focus on understanding anger; identifying personal triggers; managing conflict with others; identifying and practicing strategies that work for you, and learning how to manage your response for the long-term.



Stress: Take Charge!  

(1 Day, 0830-1600 hrs)

This interactive program offers an effective, skills-based approach to managing stress. Through self-awareness, behaviour change and skill building, participants will examine stress within their lives and learn about the stress response. Various relaxation/stress management techniques and strategies will be explored and practiced.



Inter-Personal Communication (Inter-Comm)

(Must attend both days, 0830-1600hrs)

A course specifically designed for Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel and their families. The course is intended to increase capacity to manage conflict, nurture collaboration and communicate effectively. The course is led by facilitators from both the Military Family Resource Centre and Health Promotion.



Family Violence Awareness & Prevention Leadership Workshop

(1 day, 0830-1530hrs)

This workshop will focus on identifying when someone might be affected by family violence, what the CAF defines family violence as, a CAF members role in reporting incidences of family violence and resources available. (In accordance with DAOD 5044-4, COs will receive the mandatory Family Violence Briefing at the upcoming Garrison Council). 


Addiction Awareness and Prevention


Alcohol, Other Drugs, Gambling and Gaming (AODGG) Supervisor Training

Rank level MCpl and above (2 day course) (must attend both days, 0800-1600hrs)

All military supervisors are required to take this course at some point in their career; it is MITE coded. Supervisors will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of addiction and, through practice, apply the DND policies around alcohol, other drugs, gambling and gaming. Supervisors will be given an opportunity to develop and practice strategies to promote an addiction free work environment.



Self-Managed Butt Out Program

We know for most people quitting tobacco is not easy. Butt Out can help! CAF personnel who need support can participate in the Self-Managed Butt Out Program. Trained Health Promotion staff will provide you with the tools, resources and support necessary to help you quit and achieve a tobacco free lifestyle. If you are thinking about quitting and need help making a decision, check out the ‘Do I Want to Quit Smoking? Decision Balance Worksheet’. This tool can assist you with analyzing your reasons for quitting. 


Nutritional Wellness


Top Fuel for Top Performance (TFTP) 

(one day, 0830-1600hrs)

Are you looking to fine tune your eating and activity habits? Would you like to know how supplements can impact your physical performance? Are you eating enough to fuel your activity? TFTP offers participants an opportunity to determine their personal energy requirement and learn new tips on how to maximize their overall physical performance. This interactive workshop includes education on Everyday Eating, Fuelling for Training and Recovery, Nutrient Timing and Hydration Before, During & After Physical Activity, Body Composition and Weight Issues and Sports Supplements.

Mission: Nutrition! (MN) (WWLP)

Mission: Nutrition! (MN) is a Nutritional Wellness Lifestyle Program that provides participants with the opportunity to improve and/or maintain their current eating behaviours and habits. Learn how to use the Canada’s Food Guide to meal plan, understand food labels, prepare budget-friendly meals and practice a variety of food skills. A cooking component is also included to build on your kitchen skills and to test your taste buds! Register for any number of the below workshops. (0830-1200 hrs)

  • Mission: Nutrition – More Than Food
    Join Health Promotion for an interactive session on the world of nutrition. We will address some common myths and explore WHY nutrition can be so confusing. Using Canada’s Food Guide you will learn some strategies to help you make nutritious food choices more often. This session will also include a cooking component where you will have an opportunity to build on your skills in the kitchen! (One day - 0830-1200 hrs)
  • Mission: Nutrition – Energy Balance & Mindful Eating

    Join Health Promotion for a discussion on ‘Why “diets” don’t work?’ Throughout the session you will learn about the concept of energy balance when it comes to weight management and learn effective strategies such as, mindful eating, to help you achieve your nutrition goals. This session will also include a cooking component where you will have an opportunity to build on your skills in the kitchen! (One day - 0830-1200 hrs)

  • Mission: Nutrition – Sharpen Your Food Skills - 6 Dec, 0830-1200hrs

    Meal planning is a skill we could all use help with. Join Health Promotion to learn tips on meal planning and creating budget friendly meals. You will also enhance your awareness on how food marketing influences your food choices and learn how to read Canada’s NEW nutrition label. This session will include a cooking component where you will have an opportunity to build on your skills in the kitchen! (One day - 0830-1200 hrs)

  • Mission: Nutrition – Nutrition Under the Microscope

    Should I limit my carbohydrates? Am I getting enough protein? Do your eating habits reflect the nutrient recommendations for a balanced healthy diet? Join Health Promotion for a deep dive discussion on the six classes of nutrients. Learn how to apply the nutrient recommendations to your own style of eating. This session will also include a cooking component where you will have an opportunity to build on your skills in the kitchen! (One day - 0830-1200 hrs)



Active Living and Injury Prevention


Injury Reduction Strategies for Sports and Physical Activity (IRS)

(1230-1600 hrs)

IRS aims to provide scientific based evidence about injuries in the CAF at both a National and Local level. This workshop, facilitated by local Subject Matter Experts in the field of Health Promotion, Physiotherapy and Fitness, provides a practical component for participants to apply a variety of injury-reducing strategies for both their personal fitness and Unit PT. Discover why more people may be risking injury when they are exercising and learn a few simple strategies you can implement to help prevent injuries.
