Resources for schools & teachers in HRM

The school outreach program provides information, resources and support to educators and students about the unique lifestyle characteristics of military families. The H&R MFRC builds relationships with schools in our community that have students from military families. Military families are encouraged to tell their school principal and/or guidance counsellor about what the H&R MFRC can offer, or contact us to send information to the school.

There are a number of ways we can support schools:

BRIEFINGS TO EDUCATORS

(30 - 45 MINUTES) DURING SCHOOL IN-SERVICE DAYS

These briefings include a general overview of the military lifestyle, what services we provide and unique aspects of the military lifestyle, such as deployment and reunions or moving/postings

RESOURCES TO EDUCATORS

Resources to educators about deployments, adjusting to new schools, communicating with deployed parents, and the military lifestyle.

BRIEFINGS TO STUDENTS

Briefings to students can be tailored to a specific subject, such as communicating with a deployed parent; what to expect when a parent comes home; road trip games when moving or tools to help feel comfortable at a new school.

Briefings to students may include one or more of the following:

  • A story specific to the topic discussed (deployment, reunion, communication, emotions);
  • A trivia game specific to the topic discussed;
  • An interactive puzzle with questions related to the unique military lifestyle;
  • Group discussion; and
  • Hands-on experience: draw a picture of the parent’s ship, compose a letter to the troops, or create a countdown calendar.
