Schools

Whether you are looking to attend post-secondary or looking for a school to meet your child’s needs, there are a variety of educational choices to meet your family’s needs and help you develop good foundations for overall health, wellness, and continued learning.

The Quebec education system is different from that of the other provinces of Canada. It is managed by the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur [Ministry of Education and Higher Education]. The system includes four levels of teaching: preschool education (pre-kindergarten and kindergarten), primary and secondary education (including general training and job training), college education (including preuniversity and technical training) as well as university education.

  • From kindergarten to secondary is offered in both official languages.
  • Preschool education (ages 4-5) is not mandatory
  • Attendance of primary school is mandatory from ages 6 to 16.
  • Most schools in Quebec are organized under school boards.

Post-Secondary Schools

Each year, many students come to pursue their post-secondary studies at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi , which is the only regional University. Alternately some opt to attend the more distant Laval University .
