Scholarships

Scholarships are merit awards based on grades, community service, or on other unique criteria. These are offered by schools, private donors, workplaces, etc. and often require you to complete a supplementary application beyond your application to a post-secondary institution.

School specific scholarships

Typically, you can access purely grade-based scholarships or bursaries from the schools to which you are applying. For students just entering their undergrad, there is not typically anything special you need to do to access these as they are automatically generated based on your marks. You will still want to check the Financial Aid pages of the schools to which you have applied for the following reasons:

You will want to review whether your grade-based scholarships can go up or down once your final marks come in. Your final acceptance is based on your June grades (not necessarily the grades upon which your offer was based). It is also not unusual for your final grade-based scholarship to fluctuate up or down with final June marks. This means that it is best to maintain your effort until the very end even though you might have an offer and feel your work is done

Although non-grade-based scholarships and bursaries tend to be limited for applicants coming out of high school, you may find some offerings on the Financial Aid page for which you are eligible to apply. These merit-based scholarships are based on more than just grades.

Carefully and thoroughly read ALL communication you get from Admissions as these may contain information about supplementary scholarships or bursaries available to students through Financial Aid.

General scholarship and bursaries

CAF dependents have unique access to a variety of scholarships through Support Our TroopsLearn more about these scholarships, eligibility, and timelines.

Besides CAF-specific options, you can also find links to sources available to all Canadian students. Several of these are scholarship databases and could be a suitable place to start. Register with a resource like SCHOLARTREE or SCHOLARSHIPS CANADA where you will be able to find scholarships that best suit your profile. There are other options out there…look at a few and choose the one that seems the best fit for you.

Millions of dollars in potential scholarship money go unclaimed each year. Mostly, these are smaller scholarships (for e.g. $500). It seems likely that people look at the value of the scholarship, and the cost of their tuition, and they decide it is not worth the effort. However, if you have a portfolio created from which you can draw information easily (more on this to follow) then you could quickly apply to a variety of scholarships for which you are eligible. The math is simple, 10 small scholarships worth $500 each substantially reduce your educational costs by $5000, which is significant!
