Embracing Change and Creating Resilient Moments

Summer Transitions in the National Capital Region (NCR) for Canadian Armed Forces Families

As we head into the summer season, many military families may find themselves facing changes and challenges, such as postings, relocations and the uncertainty of establishing new family norms and becoming adjusted to new communities, specifically surrounding the Ottawa-Gatineau area. The Military Family Services NCR Mental Health Team understands that these transitions can be overwhelming. We believe that with flexibility and a positive mindset, every family can make the most of these changes and create exciting opportunities for their families.

Here are some tips to help families embrace these changes and challenges:
  1. Embrace the adventure: Instead of viewing the move or transition as a burden, approach it as an adventure. Encourage your families to view this transition as an opportunity to explore new places, meet new people, and learn about themselves. By embracing the adventure, you can create a sense of excitement, flexible thinking and anticipation for the whole family. Keep it simple, be realistic and assess your energy levels. Some days will be busy and full of activities while others can be more laid back and relaxed.
  2. Foster flexibility: Knowing that our military families are resilient and often pivot in times of uncertainty, it requires flexibility and understanding. It is important to model this behaviour, and show that adaptability is a valuable skill and that embracing new experiences can lead to personal growth and resilience. Encourage family members to approach the changes with an open mind and willingness to learn and adapt.
  3. Establish routines: Routines provide a sense of stability and predictability, which can be especially important during times of change. Create new routines in your new environment to help everyone adjust and establish a sense of normalcy.  This can include designated mealtimes, family activities, and bedtime rituals.
  4. Create excitement: Help your family members see the move or transition as an opportunity for new experiences and adventures. Research and share information about the new community, including fun activities, local attractions, and events. This will help everyone feel more excited about the changes ahead. Planning activities can help motivate energy and increase positive mental health. It is important to have something to look forward to (whether that is going to a music festival, reading a book, going to the beach, spending time on the river, riding a bike, learning a new hobby or sport).
  5. Connecting with the community: Reaching out and connecting with the community can help you and your family feel more settled and supported. Attend local events, join community groups, local community libraries and centers – including your local Military Family Services and seek opportunities to meet new people. Building connections will help create a sense of belonging and make the transition to a new community smoother for everyone.
  6. Maintain open communication: Talk to your family members about the upcoming changes and involve them in the decision-making process whenever possible. Allow them to express their thoughts and concerns and assure them of the value in their opinion. By involving your family members in the conversation, you can help everyone feel more empowered and excited about a new journey.
Of course, change can be challenging, but it also presents opportunities for growth and new experiences. By embracing the changes, maintaining open communication, fostering flexibility, and creating excitement, CAF families can make the most of these transitions and help their family members look forward to the future.

Wishing you a summer filled with exciting adventures and new beginnings.
