NDHQ CWO Jason Pickard challenges all leaders in the NCR to “TAKE 10 for an Active Break” this October!

You could win a complimentary healthy snack break for your unit.

Good leaders care about their people and want their teams to be healthy and productive. Great leaders support operational effectiveness by enabling and promoting physical activity (Ref A) and mental wellbeing through a supportive environment.

"TAKE 10 for an Active Break" is a call to action and a challenge to NCR unit leaders (at all levels) to prioritize taking breaks for mental and physical health this fall. Active Breaks are a simple way to promote mental and physical health in the workplace and positively impact your unit’s health and wellness culture! Daily short active breaks during the workday are also very valuable in helping with productivity, focus and mood. It’s a win-win.

The “10” can be:

  • The number of repetitions of an activity like 10 squats, deep breaths or desk pushups to break up long periods of sitting.
  • The amount of time for a break activity like a 10-minute walking meeting or a 10-minute mindfulness meditation to improve your focus and decrease stress.

How to get started:

  • Use the tools in our leadership toolkit to foster a work environment where taking breaks for your fitness and mental health is expected and an easy choice.
  • Create a supportive environment for your unit members by taking active breaks yourself and encouraging others to join in or take their own!

The hard part? Making it a habit and modeling the behaviour as a unit leader!

Below you'll find a weekly challenge for October to help create a habit and get you started.

Join CWO Pickard and challenge YOUR team to “TAKE 10 for an Active Break” every day in October.

Weekly Challenges

  • Week 1: Oct 1-4
Download the bingo card for everyday activities you can do to TAKE 10 for an Active Break in October. Remember to send it to your unit members and invite them to join you. How many lines can you complete each week?  (It’s a short week, you can do it!)

  • Week 2: Oct 7-11
Take your bathroom breaks further away or on a different floor. Use the bathroom that is furthest away from your workstation. Encourage others to do the same.
  • Week 3: Oct 15-18
Add 10 minutes of walking to your workday, every day. Park your car further away, get off the bus a stop early, climb the stairs during break time, walk around the building(s) if it’s safe, or try a trail if you’re at NDHQ (Carling)! Every step counts, each minute adds up. Keep your team engaged by asking how they’re adding steps to their workday, every day!
  • Week 4: Oct 21-25
Active meeting challenge! Conduct your next 2 meetings this week as a walking, standing, or third location meeting. Do a TAKE 10 activity from the Bingo card while you’re at it! Counter push-ups, calf raises, squats or lunges followed by a few deep breaths are some great options. You can also include an active component in other ways, be creative! (see CAF Fitness for examples of exercises or stretches). Encourage your unit members to do the same!
  • Week 5: Oct 28- 31
TAKE 10 team active break! Plan a unit active break this week – it can be something simple! Just plan a short 10 mins time to walk away for a team break. Make it clear that their COC supports taking short active breaks for mental and physical wellbeing. Celebrate your unit members when they’ve made an effort to take active breaks this month!

Units who “TAKE 10” in October could win a complimentary healthy snack break.
