Health & Dental Services

  • Standard of care
The standard of care is quite high in Brussels and members and their families have several option including local medical services, visiting the American Forces health facility in Brussels (US NATO Health Clinic) and/or meeting with a Canadian doctor and dentist. The Canadian doctor and dentist are based out of SHAPE but provide services at the US NATO Health Clinic in Brussels according to a schedule. The US NATO Health Clinic is based in Sterrebeek, Brussels.

To make an appointment with the Canadian doctor: 06/544 5959
To make an appointment with the Canadian dentist: 06/532 5328

If you need a specialist, the doctor at SHAPE will book an appointment for you. Specialist appointments will be scheduled with someone in Brussels.

There are several options available for medical and dental needs in the economy. Like Canada, Belgian medical clinics operate with appointments, although doctors will make house calls outside of working hours or in the case of an emergency. You will have to pay the amount for the consultations and for the care received and then you will be able to make the request for reimbursement in accordance with PSHCP guidelines.

It’s also the same process to consult a dentist. Regular appointments are to be booked through the Canadian Dental office. Please consult with the clinic for Brussels visiting schedule at the US NATO Health Clinic.

You can choose to visit a Belgian dentist. Note that you must pay for the service and that you and dependents will be reimbursed through PSHCP.

All patients who require admission to hospital will be referred to Belgian health care facilities. This medical care is of a very high standard, but support services are not what you would expect from a Canadian hospital. Bring along your own pyjamas, slippers, house coat, thermometer, towels, Kleenex, toilet paper and personal articles, drinking water and Belgium phone card. All hospital stays will be closely monitored by the Canadian Doctor and PA. Please do not bring personal valuables.
  • Access to Services
If you would like to meet the Canadian doctor or dentist in between the schedule note that driving time from Brussels to SHAPE is approximately 45 minutes (non-rush hour traffic). It is recommended that you upon your arrival in Brussels locate the hospital and emergency services nearest to your place of residence.

Flemish and French are the working languages in hospitals in the Brussels area. At the St. Luc Hospital many of the staff also speaks English. Please contact the Canadian Health clinic for assistance.
  • Payment
Crutches, wheelchairs and other medical equipment can be signed out for military members and their dependants at SHAPE when required. However, this is not the case for a visitor. For further information, contact the Canadian PA.
  • Specialists
Radiology and Laboratory services are also available at NATO HQ on Thursday mornings from 8:00 to 12:00 in addition to Thursday afternoon.

Appointments can be made for eye test at the SHAPE clinic through central bookings at 065/445 886 or 860. Prescriptions on eye glass costs are reimbursable. Military personnel should contact the Canadian Physician’s Assistant (PA) for detailed procedures on how to proceed. Civilians and dependants are reimbursed in accordance with PSHCP guidelines.
