The Winnipeg MFRC is pleased to introduce Tamika Reid to our 17 Wing community.

Tamika is our new Community Services Advisor. If you are a member who is deploying, released, releasing or medically releasing, or you are a new recruit, she is your go-to person to access the supports and services that the MFRC provides.

Tamika will support members and their families through work-related absences due to deployment. She will also help the families of veterans and new recruits navigate through the challenges of transition. Her work is vital in furthering our modernized approaches to serving military and veteran families.

She holds a Joint-Communications Degree from the University of Winnipeg and Red River College, with a Master's in Cultural Studies and Minors in English and Political Science from the University of Winnipeg.

As someone who grew up with a military father and as a Navy Reservist and a military spouse all at the same time, she has lived the military lifestyle, and she knows it comes with many challenges.

Working in the Navy Reserves for nine years, she has experienced deployment in all its stages. Her experience will significantly help in her work of preparing families for deployment, checking in with warm line calls during a deployment, and providing services when the deployment is over.

Tamika also serves as our Veteran Family Coordinator. She will assist members, veterans, and their families during the pre-release and post-release of a medical (3B) release and their transition to civilian support and services. She will also focus on building relationships with the veteran community.

Additionally, Tamika will support the families of new recruits and ensure they have the knowledge and resources to prepare for this new role of supporting a military member.

From what she has experienced, frequent moves, family separations, or setting or re-setting roots or routines are hard on the family. People only see the high stress associated with combat situations but often do not see and think about the strain on the family or their social or mental health. Finding ways to alleviate the stresses will drive how she will serve the members, veterans, and their families.

Having worked for the MFRC for a few weeks, she said, "There are way more supports than people realized. All you have to do is come and ask. It is a non-judgmental place to go to for help. The team has years of experience, with some being military spouses themselves."

She feels she has found a new purpose in her new role. She said, "Working with people facing challenges I have personally encountered, and being the person to validate and address those challenges give me a sense of accomplishment."

With what Tamika has under her belt, we can be sure to provide you and your family with tailored supports. You may also be looking for the stamp needed for your next deployment - Tamika is just the right person to see for that.
