Voting while OUTCAN

Spouses & Dependants

Spouses and dependants must register for the International Register of Electors (IROE) with Elections Canada. The IROE maintains a list of eligible Canadian electors living outside of Canada and will automatically send out mail-in ballot kits when a federal election is called.

Required documentation (one of the following):

  • pages 2 and 3 of the elector’s Canadian passport;
  • both sides of the elector’s Canadian citizenship card; or
  • birth certificate, showing the elector was born in Canada

How do I apply to have my name added to the International Register of Electors?

It is recommend that electors apply online.
You can also download the PDF form, print it, and send it to the coordinates on the form (fax, mail) or contact Elections Canada and request that an application be sent to you by mail.

How does Elections Canada determine my riding?

On your application, you must indicate your last address before leaving Canada, which determines the electoral district for which your vote will be counted.

  • You must use a physical address. You cannot use a post office box or rural route, except in areas where no other physical address is available. This address cannot be changed after your name is added to the International Register of Electors.

CAF Members

During a federal general election, CF electors can vote by special ballot at polling stations set up at Canadian Armed Forces units, particularly in locations with a concentration of CAF members.

CAF members without a Canadian unit in their location or whose polling stations are not conveniently located will need to register with Elections Canada as a CF Member in order to vote.
