Spring Refresh

Written by Marion Hall, BSW, RSW

We are so close; you can feel the change in the air. We are on the cusp of spring, the season of renewal and rejuvenation. The weather is warming up, and flowers will soon begin to bloom, reminding us of the awe and resilience of nature as it awakens from its winter slumber. We’re about to enter a season symbolized by growth, new life, fresh starts, renewed energy, and inspiration. Traditionally, it's a time to spring clean, declutter, and organize our physical environment—opening the windows and letting the fresh air in. In the same way, the upcoming season offers an opportunity to spring-clean our minds, refresh our mental health, and invigorate our overall well-being.

Spring is a wonderful time to renew our commitment to healthy habits and embrace change, just as nature does. It's an opportunity to declutter not only our homes but also our lives and mental health—embracing changes that will improve our mental well-being. Here are a few strategies to help guide your plan for renewed mental health:

Get outside! Mother Nature is a powerful healer, offering therapeutic benefits. As the temperature rises, the increased sunshine boosts Vitamin D levels, which is essential for mood and mental health. Research has shown that a lack of Vitamin D is linked to anxiety and depression. Engaging with nature lowers cortisol (our stress hormone), improves mood, reduces anxiety, and, when paired with physical activity, boosts overall physical health.

Get moving! Physical activity and mental health go hand in hand. Studies have long demonstrated that exercise improves mental health, making it a valuable tool against depression and anxiety. Spring’s warmer weather is the perfect invitation to engage in outdoor activities. Maybe this is the season to start a running program, take up biking again, or set new distance goals. What better time to go hiking in the great outdoors?

Get involved! Spring is a great time to reconnect with friends after winter hibernation. The longer days encourage socializing, visiting people we haven't seen in a while, dusting off the BBQ, and organizing gatherings. Social connection is essential for mental health, and what better time to refresh those connections than in spring? You could also explore new clubs in your area (pickleball, anyone?), volunteer in your community, or offer help to neighbors who may need a little extra support.

Spring isn’t just about decluttering our homes—it’s also about spring-cleaning our minds. It’s synonymous with renewal, refreshment, and resetting. This is the perfect time to revisit our priorities, set new intentions and goals, and practice mindfulness. Just like a trip to the thrift store helps us let go of “stuff,” it’s a chance to let go of negative thoughts and behavior patterns. Similar to opening the window to let fresh spring air in, we can open our minds to new ideas and opportunities.
