Established at Garrison Petawawa in 2012 PSP Petawawa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a certified with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) and Muay Thai Ontario/Muaythai Canada. For beginner to advanced students, we teach the techniques, tactics and strategies of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), a ground-based martial art that utilizes leverage and angles to defeat larger, stronger opponents through the application of superior positioning and submission holds, and Muay Thai (MT), sometimes referred to as the ‘art of eight limbs,’ that uses stand-up striking (fists, elbows, knees and shins) along with various clinching techniques.
Under the guidance and tutelage of Chief Instructors, Professor Steve Burgess and Kru Ricky Godoy, students will receive the highest level of professional instruction available anywhere in Canada. Whether you want to learn effective self-defence, improve your overall physical fitness level, develop long-lasting friendships with fellow students during your martial journey or compete in sport competitions, at the highest levels, this sport is for you.
Jiu Jitsu - Beginner & Advanced
One of the most effective, combat-proven martial arts in the world today, these formal instructional classes are designed to develop a student’s specific skills and tactical knowledge of the martial art of jiu-jitsu. A typical class consists of a BJJ-specific warm-up (solo and partner drills), followed by the practice of a specific throw/takedown (nage-waza) and then 2-3 ground-based techniques are covered. Upon conclusion of the instructional portion, the remainder of the class is reserved for ‘free sparring’ (randori) in order to give students the opportunity to practice the techniques they have learned, under ‘live’ conditions against a non-compliant opponent. In addition to the sportive aspects of jiu-jitsu training and its style-specific approach to fighting, students will also learn realistic, effective self-defence techniques so they develop both the skills and confidence required to protect themselves during real-world, high-threat encounters.
Women’s ONLY Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
These formal instructional classes are offered to women only and are designed to develop a student’s specific skills and tactical knowledge of the martial art of jiu-jitsu. A typical class consists of a BJJ-specific warm-up (solo and partner drills), followed by the practice of a specific throw/takedown (nage-waza) and then 2-3 ground-based techniques are covered. Open Mat Training (BJJ and MT)
Open Mat Training sessions are designed to provide students with additional training opportunities to practice techniques they have learned during the instructional classes and to ‘free spar’ with their training partners. Throughout the year, Team Evolution BJJ & MT Petawawa participates in numerous provincial, national and international level competitions. As such, the extra training opportunities enable the students, with their coaches, to develop their ‘competitive’ skillsets to the highest level possible.
