Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor
The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques.
Swim Instructor course: 20 hr stand-alone course (40 hr when combined with a Lifesaving Instructor course).

Lifesaving Instructor
The Lifesaving Instructor course prepares instructors to teach the Lifesaving Society’s:
- Canadian Swim Patrol Program
- Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross
- Lifesaving Fitness, Distinction
- Basic and Emergency First Aid, and CPR-A, CPR-B and CPR-C
- Lifesaving Instructor course: 20 hr. classroom and water time (often 40 hr. when combined with the Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Course). This checklist identifies the learning outcomes that you must achieve in order to be successful on the course.

Prerequisites: 15 years of age by the end of the course; Bronze Cross certification (need not be current).

Bronze Cross
The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs.
This course includes an endurance swim (400m) performed in 11 minutes or less.

Bronze Medallion + EFA
Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water.
Emergency First Aid is for people who want a general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include: victim assessment, CPR, choking and what to do for external bleeding, heart attack, stroke wounds and burns. Includes CPR-B certification.
Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. Emergency First Aid certification is valid for 36 months from the certification date.
Please be aware that this course requires a lot of swimming, including a 400 m endurance swim performed in 12 minutes or less.

Bronze Medallion + Bronze Cross Combo
The first half of the course, candidate will work towards their Bronze Medallion:

National Lifeguard: Pool
National Lifeguard (NL) is a legal certificate for lifeguarding throughout the country and is recognized by the province of Ontario for lifeguarding public swimming pools. The National Lifeguard Pool certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. The National Lifeguard course emphasizes the lifeguarding skills, principles and practices, and the decision-making processes that will assist the lifeguard to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments.

National Lifeguard: Pool - Recert
National Lifeguard (NL) certification is current for 2 years and is re-certified by completing a National Lifeguard recertification exam. The recertification may require 6 - 8 hr. depending on the number of candidates.
The National Lifeguard recertification exam is your opportunity to demonstrate your skills and re-certify your award. You are responsible for reviewing the required content and skills and preparing yourself for the exam. Your exam is based on the National Lifeguard Award curriculum.
Prerequisites: Minimum 15 years of age, NLS Pool Certification, and Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid (need not be current) or Standard First Aid from one of these approved agencies.

National Lifeguard: Waterfront
National Lifeguard (NL) course consists of a core course dealing with lifeguarding principles and techniques in outdoor open water.
Prerequisites: National Lifeguard Certification and Current Standard First Aid and CPR C from one of: Lifesaving Society, St. John Ambulance, Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Ski Patrol.
