Building Belonging, One Volunteer at a Time

If there’s one thing I’ve learned during our OUTCAN posting to the UK, it’s this: Canadian military communities don’t just exist – they are built. Quietly, generously, and often behind the scenes. Across England, Scotland, and beyond, Canadian Armed Forces members and spouses are volunteering their time with Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services to make this overseas experience richer for all of us. From leading remote outreach events for Canadian families in their area, to supporting PSP activities or hosting coffee mornings, our volunteers help us feel less alone; these efforts matter.

They matter on the days when homesickness hits hard. They matter when a newly arrived family is trying to figure out how to navigate British schools, NHS appointments, and the countless roundabouts. They matter when we gather for Canada Day thousands of kilometers from home and still somehow feel that unmistakable sense of belonging.

Volunteering while posted OUTCAN comes with its own challenges. We’re often far from extended family support. Many spouses are navigating employment changes, new school systems, and cultural adjustments. Military members are balancing demanding roles while adapting to a different command structure and time zone. And yet, people still raise their hands to help.

They host coffee mornings or get togethers so that no one feels isolated. They volunteer to organize events using remote outreach funds for members in their community. They host the annual Holiday dinner. This isn’t just volunteering. It’s community-building across borders.

Living in the UK has given many of us incredible opportunities; travel, history at our doorstep, new friendships. But what makes this posting truly meaningful is the network of Canadians who choose to show up for one another. Volunteerism becomes the thread that ties us together, from Lossiemouth to Cornwall, from small, rural RAF bases to bustling cities.

So, this is a thank you to the members who give their time after work hours. To the spouses who step into leadership roles without hesitation. To the families who volunteer together, showing their children what service beyond uniform looks like. You are the reason this community feels like home, even when we are far from it!
