Community Characteristics

Cold Lake is situated in Alberta’s “Lakeland” district, located 300 kilometers northeast of Edmonton and near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. The surrounding area primarily consists of farmland. 

The history of Cold Lake dates to the late 1700s and consists of three original communities that include Grand Centre, the town of Cold Lake, and the Canadian Forces Base, Cold Lake. These three communities merged, which is why the area is sometimes referred to as “Tri-Town”.

Weather

Summers are generally warm days with cool nights, making Cold Lake perfect for outdoor recreation and activities that promote and maintain your physical wellness. Winters are very cold with moderate snowfall. It is therefore recommended that when transitioning to Cold Lake, you ensure yours vehicles have block heating and you ensure proper preparation for low temperatures.

Population Characteristics

As of 2020, Cold Lake has an estimated population of 15,416 with an annual population increase of around 0.58% year over year. Cold Lake is overall a relatively young community with the average age of 32.

Spoken Languages

The most spoken language is English (≈85%) with the remaining minority (≈15%) of the population speaking other languages including French and other indigenous languages.
