September 2024 - Amy Cuming

Amy's story is a testament to her dedication, leadership, and compassion. Her commitment to serving others now serves as a guiding light for everyone involved with the Greenwood Skating Club.

Amy's journey with the 14 Wing Greenwood Skating Club has been nothing short of extraordinary, according to Lindsay McCormack, Community Recreation Coordinator at 14 Wing Greenwood. Stepping into the role of president, Amy embraced a multitude of responsibilities with grace and determination. From meticulously managing budget records to representing the club on various levels, Amy's dedication shone through every aspect of her work.

Over the past season, Amy's leadership has not only elevated the club's success but has also fostered a sense of camaraderie and unity among volunteers, committee members, coaches, and participants. Her commitment to open communication, positive attitude, and creative thinking has created a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere where teamwork thrives.

Amy’s journey began as a volunteer with the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre and she continued her volunteering, upon being posted, at Greenwood MFRC. “I volunteered when I had the time between raising two children. Favorite Volunteer Experience? My favorite, coordinating and teaching the Strive for Five program, which brought children and their caregivers into the kitchen cooking healthy meals on a budget”.

Amy’s inspiration for volunteering? Her daughter’s involvement with an extra-curricular program.   In Amy’s own words, “She started with the Greenwood Skating Club in the CanSkate program…I saw the positive effect it had on my teenage daughter therefore when the club required a military member in the president position on the board, I was happy to help.”

In helping, Amy found her calling.  “I have always had the idea that I was a helper. When I had my family and saw the work that goes into providing programs and services to benefit the community, and saw how important it was, and that there was a need. It made me think of the impact I could have”.

She also identified an additional benefit, her mental health “At a time when I was a stay-at-home mom, new to a community, and had a military spouse who was always deployed. It gave me something to focus on. Volunteering provided me with an opportunity to connect with people, develop skills and share my interests. It helped provide structure to my days and gave me time to be something other than a mother and a spouse”.

Amy has left an indelible mark on the lives of over 250 participants and their families within the Greenwood Skating Club offering them the opportunity to be part of a safe, inclusive, and joyful skating program.
