July 2024 - Alorah York

Alorah has made a lasting impression on the lives of those she has touched, enriching the community and fostering a sense of togetherness among military families.

One could say that one of Alorah’s earliest volunteer ventures started with “a Smile” or, more specifically, a Tim Horton’s SMILE Cookie. One of her first volunteer ventures was to make Smile cookies and to help out with Camp Day.

Alorah joined the Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre (PMFRC) as a youth volunteer in 2022, eager to make a difference in her community. Over the years, she immersed herself in various projects, from providing admin support to organizing the holiday parade and setting up events. Her passion for volunteering shone through as she spent hours painting faces, facilitating Lego clubs, and lending a helping hand wherever needed, according to Sarah Gunter, Volunteer Specialist, PMFRC.

Despite her busy schedule, Alorah never hesitated to extend her volunteer work beyond PMFRC, engaging in community projects that touched the lives of many.

In Alorah’s own words, “My motivation for volunteering is my drive to help people in any way possible. I enjoy lending a helping hand whenever I can. I am currently in grade 10 and have accumulated over 160 hours with all of my volunteering experience and I plan on getting that number as high as possible”.

Alorah's dedication to volunteerism has made a significant impact on military families. Through her selfless actions and unwavering support, she has directly contributed to the success of programs and services tailored to support those in need. Alorah's commitment to making a difference has exemplified the true spirit of giving back and has inspired others to follow in her footsteps.

Alorah’s best memory? “Currently my favourite volunteering memory is working on creating the Haunted House at the library. I met a lot of new people and got to let my creative mind free. We worked on it for months and had an amazing time every time I went in to help out, especially when it was time to finally have the haunted house.”

“Alorah is a team player. At such a young age, she knows the importance of giving back to her community. She is quick to sign up and really does a great job at balancing, volunteering, work and school”, according to Sarah.

Whether it is organizing charity events, helping out at the local shelter, or tutoring younger students, Alorah, will always be there with a willingness to lend a hand. Alorah’s dedication and commitment, to making a difference in the lives of others, inspires those around her, showing us that age is just a number when it comes to making a positive impact in the world.
