All Health Promotion Courses, including Respect in the CAF, are voluntary and educational workshops. They are not occupational training, nor are they meant to be used as remedial measures.

If you are interested in taking a course or workshop that does not have an upcoming date listed, please contact the Health Promotion Office to be added to the interest list and be the first to be notified when a course date is set.
All Health Promotion courses are FREE and open to all military members and their families (over 18 yrs), as well as DND/NPF/MFRC employees.
All courses require a minimum registration number of eight (8) to ensure a good group dynamic. Register early, you don't want to be disappointed!

Butt Out - Self Guided Program
Research shows the best success rates for tobacco cessation comes from a combination of behaviour modification, support, and medications to increase cessation success.
Butt Out is designed to help individuals overcome nicotine addiction by providing education, support, and research. Receive the right tools to see you succeed, including a self-guided quit support package and personal one-on-one check-ins for support and accountability.

Creating Resilient Communities: Addiction Prevention (CRC: AP)
1-DAY COURSE
Use of alcohol, other drugs, gambling, and gaming to change how we feel is a reality for many. While not everyone will go on to develop problematic use, there are still risks to our health and well-being.
This workshop is open to anyone who is interested in learning how to recognize and respond to early warning signs of substance use, gambling, and gaming misuse.
Participants will engage in interactive discussion regarding alcohol, cannabis, other drugs, gambling, and video gaming, as well as talking about problematic use with others and where to seek help. -
(Inter-Comm): Communication and Conflict in Personal Relationships
1-DAY COURSE
What is the most effective way to communicate? Why do we communicate well with some people and not others? What is your communication style?
If you have these same questions, then this course is for you! Inter-Comm is a skill-building course that will give you some basic tools to help enhance communication in your personal relationships. It examines the theory of conflict, styles of communication, and effective strategies for communication.
Note that this course is not meant for individual workplace or relationship therapy.
This is a coded course and will be recorded on each member's MPRR upon successful completion. -
Injury Reduction Strategies (IRS)
1/2-DAY COURSE

The Injury Reduction Strategies for Sports and Physical Activity Workshop offers an overview of strategies to protect your body from injury and practical tips you can apply to your everyday life.

Managing Angry Moments (MAM)
2-DAYS COURSE
The “Managing Angry Moments” course is an interactive, educational tool to help you identify situations in your daily life that cause anger. You will also learn how to apply new skills on how to safely address these situations.
Are you interested in developing the skills necessary to be a healthy and effective parent, supervisor, and overall leader? Did you know that enhanced communication skills can decrease stress levels and enhance overall performance and well-being? DON’T LET THE TITLE FOOL YOU! Managing Angry Moments (MAM) is a communication-based course for EVERYONE.
This is a coded course and will be recorded on each member's MPRR upon successful completion. -
Mental Fitness & Suicide Awareness (MFSA)
TWO 1/2-DAY COURSES
- One ½-day for Mental Fitness Training (MFT)
- One ½-day for Suicide Awareness Training (SAT)
Leadership plays an instrumental role in reducing mental health stigma and creating a physically and mentally supportive environment. Mental Fitness & Suicide Awareness will cover topics such as mental fitness and leadership, reducing the stigma of mental illness, suicide awareness, introduce the ACE model and much more. Although this course is geared towards supervisors, it is open to all members of the Defence community.
This is a coded course and will be recoded on each member's MPRR upon successful completion. -
Respect in the CAF (RitCAF)
1-DAY COURSE
The Respect in the CAF workshop is an interactive curriculum intended to promote respect in the CAF through awareness and understanding, to empower CAF members to take a stand against sexual misconduct and to support those affected.
Due to time limitations, the workshop does not provide a detailed account of the laws governing sexual assault nor does it address issues which influence patterns of violence and abuse in the military, such as post-deployment adjustment or mental health disorders. Nevertheless, this workshop is designed to foster a sustained change in attitudes and behaviours in order to build a respectful climate and culture within the CAF. The intention is to provide basic information about the program, to answer general questions, and know where to refer individuals for more specific information.
This is a coded course and will be recorded on each member's MPRR upon successful completion.
*This military course is open to military members, as well as DND civilians. The course will have military-specific policies and discussions that may not necessarily apply to civilian attendees; nevertheless, DND civilian participation is welcomed as civilians are also part of helping to support and shape culture change. -
Stress: Take Charge! (STC)
2-DAY COURSE
Stress: Take Charge! is an in-person 2-Day course designed to teach participants how to manage stress through self-awareness, changing behaviours and skill building. You will be empowered to manage your own stress by using strategies that you already use. You will also be encouraged to learn and practice new strategies identified during the course.
At the end of the Stress: Take Charge! participants will have developed an understanding of their stress reaction in the military context and understand specific coping mechanisms that they can use in everyday life.

Cooking Workshop
1-HOUR VIRTUAL WORKSHOP
Stuck with what to make for dinner? 19 Wing Health Promotion has you covered! We’ve partnered with Erin Roman, a local Registered Dietitian, to offer you an educational cooking workshop from the comfort of your own home. This is not your typical cooking class; learn how to make delicious recipes while receiving nutritional tips and tricks to enhance your meals.
We encourage you to follow along with Erin’s step-by-step instructions. By the end of the hour, you’ll be able to sit down and enjoy dinner for 4. Cook with your family, or participate on your own and enjoy the leftovers!
We encourage you to turn on your camera as it’s way more fun when we can see each other cooking, but don’t let that stop you from registering (video is not required)!Don't have the right ingredients on hand? Not to worry – some registrants will be eligible to pick up a FREE ingredient box with all the ingredients required to participate. You are also welcome to participate on your own with your own ingredients.

Erin Roman is a Registered Dietitian based out of the Comox Valley. Erin believes that a heart-centered approach to care means that you will work together, taking into consideration everything about who and where you are in life, to better support a mind-shift when making choices about food. Essential Nutrition
3 x ½ Day Workshops
NEW OFFERING
An interactive training program that provides practical ways to eat healthier, even in challenging environments. The course was developed by Registered Dietitians (RD) and a public health and preventive medicine specialist physician.
The course is provided as three separate ½ day workshops. Participants are welcome to register for all three, two, or one!
Workshop #1: Nutrition Fundamentals & Understanding Food Labels
Key learning concepts:
Learn what, why, and when to eat
Improve mental health and physical performance with healthier eating patterns and limiting highly processed foods
Discover tips for spotting nutrition misinformation
Interpret and use Nutrition Facts table and ingredients on food packaging to make informed and healthier food decision
Workshop #2: Meal Planning & Stretching Your Food Dollar

Mindful eating strategies can help shift the mindset of what we eat to how we eat, in a flexible and positive way. This shift in thinking can help you develop healthier behaviours and a positive attitude toward food, setting you up for long-term success. -
Sleep Fundamentals Workshop
3hr Workshop
Sleep is a fundamental human need, but it can be tricky to fit it in our busy schedules and to learn sleep in a way that allows us to function optimally. Join us for an interactive and engaging workshop where we’ll discuss what sleep is, why we need and how we can achieve it. We’ll also touch on sleep within special populations, determinants of sleep and lifestyle habits, as well as sleep resources.
