    PATRON

“I feel very fortunate to be a CAF Volleyball Patron with CWO Dunfield (Co-Patron) and am excited about how we can contribute to the CAF Sports Strategy. I have participated in several CAF sports teams throughout my career and truly believe in what sports can do for CAF members and their well-being. Though it is not always easy to manage with career and family, the opportunities I had to play volleyball for RMC and on many base/wing teams allowed me to meet and learn from amazing people who were also going through similar challenges. Whether we won or lost, we supported each other through it all and built confidence to believe in ourselves no matter what. The connections transcend rank and position when you are on the volleyball court, ice rink, ball diamond or other sports field, and we all learn from each other as teammates. I hope to build on the positive energy and experiences I have had as I support the CAF Volleyball program and what it brings to our members.”

CWO Jason Dunfield grew up in a military family and used team sports to become part of the local communities as a youth. After a family posting to Halifax in Grade 10, he abandoned all other sports for a focus on Volleyball (the best one), subsequently winning a Nova Scotia Volleyball Provincial Championship with Sackville High School. CWO Dunfield would go on to play club volleyball with the Halifax Lakers and the Nova Scotia Provincial Team, eventually being recruited to play for Dalhousie University, winning a silver medal at the CIAU Championships in 1997.

CWO Dunfield joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1998 and quickly learned of the CISM Volleyball program. He remembers that first CISM Training Camp in 2000 being physically the hardest thing he had ever done. He has played volleyball for most of his career, attending several Regional and National Championships, wining National Gold and Silver with 17 Wing Winnipeg and CFB Halifax. CWO Dunfield is a firm believer in the benefits of The CAF Sports Program, and the Comradery, Teamwork and Esprit de Corps it builds with members of all ranks. Sports has certainly help grow him as a CAF member and a leader.

CWO Dunfield has had the honour of multiple postings across the country, and working within 17 Wing Winnipeg, 12 Wing Shearwater, CANSOFCOM in Petawawa, Director of Military Careers in the National Capital Region, the RCAF Academy at 16 Wing Borden, the Air Task Force in Operation Impact Kuwait and his current role as the Squadron CWO at 423 Maritime Helicopter Squadron, Shearwater. During this time, he’s competed at CISM World Volleyball Championships in Viterbo (Italy), Kingston (Ontario), Constanta (Romania), Rio De Janeiro (Brazil), a Regional Tournament in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and the 5th Military World Games in Rio De Janeiro (Brazil), hanging up his CISM Volleyball shoes in 2013. CWO Dunfield would continue to practice with base volleyball teams as his schedule would allow.

Today he enjoys coaching youth volleyball at all age groups and has coached multiple Special Olympics Sports since 2013. He enjoys hiking, adventure travel, lifting weights, and time with his two sons. In 2023, CWO Dunfield is privileged to be selected as the CO-Patron for the Men’s/Women’s CAF Volleyball. He endeavors to champion, promote, and develop the CAF Sports Program.
