The Role of Board Members

As a governance board, our directors provide leadership, accountability, and advocacy to help advance our mission. Key responsibilities include:

• Setting strategic direction and policy

• Providing financial oversight

• Ensuring legal and ethical integrity

• Championing the needs of Military families

This is a board with a collaborative spirit, united by a shared commitment to those who serve and the families who support them.

Board Meetings

The board meets monthly on the last Tuesday at 7:00 PM, with no scheduled meetings in July, August, or December. Meetings take place virtually and last approximately 1 hour.

The Mainland BC MFRC empowers individuals navigating the complexities of Military life by:

• Maintaining connections and nurturing relationships across diverse communities
• Directing families toward resources for wellness and personal growth
• Assisting families through deployments and relocations

We do this to cultivate resilience and strength in families, enabling them to flourish amidst the unique demands of Military life.

Who We Serve

We proudly serve the families of:

• Regular Force personnel

• Reserve Force personnel

• Veterans and medically released members

While many of the families we support are connected to the Army Reserve, our reach also includes families from the Navy Reserve unit HMCS Discovery in Stanley Park and the Air Force Reserve unit 192 Construction Engineering Flight in Aldergrove. Army Reserve units are active in communities throughout the province.

Our services are also available to families of Veterans, including those who have been medically released.

The Mainland BC Military Family Resource Centre is seeking dedicated individuals to join our volunteer Board of Directors.

As a governance board, our directors provide leadership, accountability, and advocacy in service of our mission. Directors set strategic direction, provide financial oversight, ensure legal and ethical governance, and champion the needs of the families we serve.

We welcome nominations from people with a range of backgrounds and experiences. This year we are particularly interested in hearing from family members of currently serving CAF members, and from candidates with experience or interest in governance and in fundraising and fund development.

Our Mission

We help military and Veteran families across Mainland BC find support, build connections, and feel at home.

Who we serve

We serve the families of Regular Force personnel, Reserve Force personnel, Veterans, and medically released members across British Columbia, excluding Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Many of the families we support are connected to Army Reserve units active in communities throughout the province, and our reach also includes the Navy Reserve unit HMCS Discovery in Stanley Park and the Air Force Reserve unit 192 Construction Engineering Flight in Aldergrove.

Who can apply

Nominees must be members in good standing of the Mainland BC Military Family Resource Centre Society. Membership is free, and the membership form is available on this page alongside the nomination form.

Under our bylaws, directors must also:

• receive a clean criminal record check
• be 18 or older and live or work in our catchment area
• agree in writing to serve
• not be an employee or contractor of the Society, or a family member of an employee

Applicants do not need to be military family members. Our bylaws require that at least 51% of the Board be family members of currently serving Canadian Armed Forces members, so nominations from military families are especially welcome.

What the role involves

Directors serve as volunteers for a two-year term and are expected to:

• Attend monthly Board meetings, held virtually on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m., with no scheduled meetings in July, August, or December
• Participate in Board discussion and decision making
• Support strategic planning and organizational governance
• Contribute to committees and special initiatives as appropriate

Meetings typically run about one hour.

Completed forms must be submitted to Lina Thompson, Executive Director, care of board@bcmfrc.com, by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, 18 September 2026.

Nominees will be contacted by the Nominations Committee for a short interview and asked to provide a criminal record check. Directors are elected by the membership at our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, 27 October 2026.
