Looking Ahead – 2026 Program Updates

In order to improve training outcomes, reduce training times, improve on-water safety standards, we are revamping our keelboat training programs and updating our certification through Transport Canada. More details will be released this spring.

The 2026 sailing program is currently in the planning stage. Final course structure, scheduling, and tuition have not yet been confirmed.

At this time, we are compiling a list of members who would like to receive additional information as it becomes available.

The 19 Wing Comox Yacht Club intends to offer the following courses accredited through the Canadian Recreational Yachting Association”, (CRYA):

  • Competent Crew
  • Day Skipper
  • Coastal Navigation

Tentative Training Schedule

  • Tentative training period: Summer 2026
  • Each course: approximately 32 hours
  • Training days and times: determined with your instructor and fellow crew members

Competent Crew

An introductory course designed to develop safe, knowledgeable, and capable crew members.

Skills Developed

  • Steering under sail and power
  • Sail handling (hoisting, trimming, reefing)
  • Docking and anchoring support
  • Line handling and knot tying
  • Man overboard recovery (as crew)
  • Onboard safety awareness and teamwork

Day Skipper

An intermediate course preparing participants to safely skipper a keelboat in moderate conditions within familiar waters.

Skills Developed

  • Confident helming under sail and power
  • Advanced sail trim
  • Docking and close-quarters maneuvering
  • Anchoring with full responsibility
  • Man overboard recovery (as skipper)
  • Basic navigation and pilotage
  • Passage planning
  • Weather assessment
  • Crew leadership and communication

Coastal Navigation

A theory-based course focused on safe coastal navigation and passage planning.

Skills Developed

  • Reading and interpreting nautical charts
  • Bearings, distance, and position plotting
  • True, magnetic, and compass conversions
  • Tides and current calculations
  • Dead reckoning and course-to-steer
  • Passage planning and hazard identification
  • Collision Regulations
  • Basic GPS principles
