A True Leader
At the heart of the SBJJ community is MCpl Kevin Camara, who volunteers an average of 5 hours each week to coaching and mentoring team members. His commitment to sportsmanship is evident in everything he does, from organizing events like the Shilo Submission Showdown to training military units for competitions.
Leading by Example
“My motivation for volunteering is always to help a student achieve their goals on the mat, be it trying to master a new technique, trying to win a competition but also to help students develop discipline that they can take into other areas of life, not just on the mat” says Camara. His inclusive approach to training not only fosters teamwork and sportsmanship but also builds a sense of mutual respect among military personnel and civilians alike.
Building Community and Camaraderie
MCpl Kevin Camara's impact in Shilo extends far beyond the walls of the SBJJ gym. Through his leadership and mentorship, he addresses a crucial need for recreational activities in the semi-isolated community, providing physical outlets and building camaraderie among troops, according to LCol O’Donnell of CFB Shilo1 RCHA.
Memorable Moments
“As a competitor, I really used to enjoy a hard-fought competition, or match but, it has brought me great joy to see my students perform and win. My two top favorite moments would have to be Ex. Strong Contender 2024 where Shilo BJJ Members from 2 PPCLI and RCHA finish 1st and 2nd respectively. My second highlight was coaching all of my students through the Shilo Submission Showdown 2. Everyone competed with heart and determination, and I couldn’t have been prouder of them.” said Camara.
In the world of volunteering, individuals like MCpl Kevin Camara stands out for their values and commitment. When asked “where would be your ideal volunteer opportunity” he responded, “I honestly just need a decent set of mats with a large enough space to workout with a dedicated crew of Grappler’s and I’m happy”.
