Where did the Volunteer journey begin?
I began volunteering with the Navy League of Canada when my son joined 207 Navy League Cadet Corps Admiral Girouard in Sooke, BC as the Training Officer. I remained in Sooke for 2 years after my son left cadets and then transferred to 127 Navy League Cadet Corps Admiral RH Falls in Langford, BC where I currently volunteer as the Executive Officer. I have since received recognition for 5 years of volunteer service to the Vancouver Island Division Cadets.
What motivates you to continue volunteering?
I continue to volunteer with the Navy League of Canada as I was a Sea Cadet prior to joining the Royal Canadian Navy where I have had the privilege of serving for the past 20 years, the Sea Cadet experience was a large part of my life. The dedication and support of those volunteers created an environment that allowed me to develop as a young adult and provided opportunities that I would not otherwise been able to participate in. Not to mention all the friendships that you develop across all the Corps within the Vancouver Island Division.
Is there an experience that stands out throughout your years of volunteering?
The best part of being a volunteer with the Navy League of Canada is that the cadets will always make you smile and always have something interesting or new to share. Seeing their smiling faces when they learn a new skill or accomplish a task with their peers is wholesome and fulfilling.
Is there someone that has made a major impact on you?
This would not be possible without the support of my family. Their understanding of additional time spent away from home so that I can support youth of the community makes it all possible.
Do you have any last words you would like to share about volunteering?
I am proud to support this amazing organization and wish to give back to what was provided to me when I was a Cadet.
