The 23-year-old graduate of Loyalist College in Belleville, Ont., has been at CFB Trenton with his parents since 2017 and used many of the PSP facilities, so he was happy to have an opportunity to give back.
A friend who serves as a lifeguard told Guzman about an opportunity at the PSP Summer Kid’s Camp.
“It’s been really rewarding,” Guzman says. “One of the things I really like is, anytime I or anybody teaches any of the kids something, they’re so open to learning. It’s really nice to see the kids improving and learning something and being a part of their overall experience.”
In addition to helping with the kids at day camp, Guzman has offered a helping hand in other ways at the recreation centre.
“Anyone who visits the RecPlex sees something he’s touched in the last two months,” says Amy Dawson, community recreation manager at Trenton, who nominated Guzman as Volunteer of the Month. “Drawings on the walls, flowers in the gardens, equipment he’s organized, sitting under tents he’s put up and so much more!
“He’s kind, generous, thoughtful, creative and so much more. Any team is lucky to work with this fine young man!”
Guzman was born in Guam. His mother married a Canadian member of the military and over the years Guzman and his family moved around numerous times. Just recently he and his mother received permanent citizenship status in Canada.
“He’s an excellent role model of how those various experiences can help grow and develop you,” says Dawson. “As hard as it may be to move, lose friends, and make new ones, our campers can see a positive example of how you can take all those experiences and share it with others.”
Guzman isn’t sure what will happen once the summer comes to an end, but says he’s thoroughly enjoyed his experience.
“I definitely would like to keep volunteering for as long as they need me,” he says. “I feel like I’m getting a lot of valuable experience.”
While in school, Guzman thought he might like to work in fitness training or health promotion, but volunteering has made him consider other avenues such as teaching.
“I’m keeping an open mind to different opportunities.”
