Keelboat Rentals & Resources

From left: Against the Wind, Wild Side and Peter Duck

We have two comfortable boats that are available for rentals at a modest cost.

For those with training credentials and relevant experience, the process to become authorized to rent our boats includes an orientation to the Club, vessels, policies & procedures, and (normally) a checkride. Contact our Keelboat Captain for more information.

Particularly for our members that are new to QUADRA, please familiarize yourself with the Summer (and Winter) protocols for the QUADRA Dock. During the summer months, the QUADRA dock hosts an extensive Sea Cadet training programme, and it is always important to be good neighbours!

Note that driving on the dock is restricted during work hours (prior permission must be obtained from Marine Section personnel or Sea Cadets in the summer) and renters and boat owners must use the manual carts to carry provisions.  (The carts are located adjacent to the 19WCYC parking spaces).

Reservation Policies:

Planning

  • Club members can make a booking of 5 days or more at any time; and
  • 4 days or less can be made a maximum of 4 weeks prior to the requested sail date(s).
  • Tenders: There is 1 new rigid-hull inflatable boat (RIB), along with several older Walker Bay tenders.  Should you wish to reserve a tender, please include your request and it will be annotated on your reservation.
  • For reservations of 4 days or more, a maintenance day will be planned before and after your sail.
  • Multi day rentals are billed per 24 hr periods, please advise your desired boarding time when making a reservation.

Payment

  • The preferred method of payment is via credit card
  • Debit card and cash payments may be made, after an invoice has been issued, at the clubhouse on TGIF (Friday 4-6 pm)
  • When a reservation is confirmed, an invoice will be emailed to the renter. Payment of the invoice within 48hrs will guarantee the reservation.
  • Losses, damages, cleaning or fueling fees may be invoiced after a sailing. Failure to pay follow-on fees will result in a suspension of privileges.
  • Member is responsible for all moorage fees during their rental. Ensure moorage is paid to marinas prior to departing.
  • Now that the Gas-N-Go is fully operational again, fuel is no-longer included in most rental pricing.
  • Note that there is an absolute expectation that the vessels be returned from multi-day trips with the same fuel as when the rental started.  Review the Comox harbour Gas n Go operating hours and plan your arrival accordingly.
    • Against the Wind and Peter Duck consume approximately 1.5 Liters per hour of engine run time.

Basic Sailing Course (BSC) Graduates (Sail Canada -  Basic Cruising Standard)

BSC graduates are limited to day sailing between Comox and Deep Bay.

  • To take a keelboat more than 16 NM from Comox, BSC graduates must:
    • Rent at least 4 days, including anchoring each day (Henry Bay / Tree Island)
    • Have completed at least two overnight anchoring trips at Henry Bay
    • Complete the Advanced Course and demonstrate proficiency with tides, calculating anchoring scope and how to stern tie. Alternatively, BSC graduates can complete a 3 day sail away from the local area with an experienced instructor, which includes two nights at anchor.

The Day of Your Sail

  • Club boat usage is limited to 18 kts, or less, wind forecast for rentals. This may be waived for instruction or on a case-by-case basis depending on the vessel and the skipper.
  • Skipper is required to carry a PCOC and ROC(M)
  • Absolutely no alcohol may be consumed onboard between first departure from a dock/mooring and being safely docked/moored at the end of the day. Skipper should be familiar with boating and alcohol laws.
  • The sailboats are secured with a combination lock; the number will be provided upon booking.  The ignition keys (if required) and lazarette keys are located inside the boats and must remain there after your trip. There is no requirement to go to the clubhouse for keelboat access, except to deposit guest waiver forms.
  • There are no pets permitted on club boats.
  • A checklist and log is included with each sailboat, detailing key operating procedures.  You must follow all the steps!  ALL SEACOCKS must be checked!.
  • Make a log entry for time boarded and time you de-boarded the vessel. Log engine run time.
  • If you encounter any problems with the boat (including missing items), please annotate in the logbook and email the Keelboat Captain. The issues will be addressed by the maintenance team.
  • Contact telephone numbers are in the boats if you need immediate contact with the keelboat team.

You are responsible to ensure that the boat is left in the same or better condition than you found it in:

  • Ensure that you follow the SOP's, including the status of the breaker panel, battery switch, shore power, seacocks etc.
  • It is expected that the vessel will be left clean, properly secured (hatches, lines, fenders, covers, seacocks), re-connected to shore power etc. You may have noticed that we are mentioning "seacocks" a lot; forget to open critical ones like the engine water intake and the engine will burn-up, while unattended boats with open seacocks have been known to sink.  Kinda important......!

Your boat must be returned with the black water tank emptied.  Pump-out instructions are aboard each of our boats. Please familiarize yourself with the regulations regarding blackwater ocean discharging HERE.  Note that the relevant paragraphs are 96(1)(e) & 96(2 through 4).  There is a shore-based pump-out facility located in the commercial harbour at Comox (which is the preferred option for emptying blackwater tanks). Note that Wild Side can only be ocean-discharged (no shore pump-out available).  Also note that the Club has arranged complimentary pump-out services (for Club Vessels only) with the Comox Marina. If you are asked to pay, please remind their staff of the prior arrangement.

Reservation Cancellations:

  • Cancellations have a sliding scale for notice:
    • For bookings of 5 days or longer, you must cancel not later than 7 days in-advance of your rental time;
    • For bookings of 2-4 days, you must cancel not later than 72 hours in-advance of your rental time; and
    • For bookings of 1 day, you must cancel not later than 24 hours in-advance of your rental time..
  • Note: refunds will be issued for cancellations due to winds in excess of 18 kts or persistent rain forecast during the rental period.
  • Short notice cancellations or no-shows may lead to suspension of your booking privileges.  Under extraordinary circumstances, the Keelboat Captain can waive the minimum notice for inclement weather conditions or exigent military requirements. Contacting the Keelboat Captain as-soon-as you know you cannot use a boat for your scheduled time may give another member the opportunity to use that boat.  Please be courteous!

In the event that the planned sailing cannot be completed due to essential equipment malfunction, a refund or partial refund may be issued. Essential equipment consists of:

  • Engine
  • Main Sail

Please remember that we are a Club, run by volunteers.  The rental fee for the boats is a token charge to partially defray the boats' maintenance and operating costs, not a cleaning fee.  It is up to everyone to look-after the boats as-if they were your own! Leave it cleaner than you found it! Wash the toilet, sink, floors, deck, cockpit, etc… Take out your garbage. Empty the holding tank outside the harbour.

Every renter is highly encouraged to volunteer for keelboat work parties. This is a great way to learn how the systems operate and how to better care for them. Volunteering keeps costs down.
