Michèle Lavigne, Volunteer Coordinator at the Wainwright Military Family Resource Centre describes this month’s volunteer as warm, approachable, and very friendly. “Kathleen has played an integral role as a dedicated volunteer for the past seven years. Her firm commitment is evident through her reliable presence at every event where volunteers are called upon. Kathleen always demonstrates a willingness to assist and support members of our community. Her involvement greatly enriches the Denwood community as she takes care of pivotal activities during our events. These activities not only guarantee the children's enjoyment, but also create an environment conducive to parents' active participation in our programs and community involvement."
We asked Kathleen to describe her volunteer experience:
I've been a volunteer with the Wainwright MFRC for seven years now, and it all started when I first came to Alberta for work. As a contract worker at the base water treatment plant, I was looking for ways to connect with the community and meet new people. Being a natural introvert, I found that volunteering provided me with a reason to get out and socialize while also keeping my hands busy with meaningful tasks.
The MFRC welcomes members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) families, veterans, and community members. As a stepchild of a veteran, I found a sense of belonging within the MFRC community, even though I didn't have a direct military background. This inclusive environment allowed me to connect with others who shared similar experiences and values.
One of the reasons I enjoy volunteering with the MFRC is the opportunity to bring joy and fun to others. The MFRC hosts welcome events throughout the year, where I offer one of my specialties, glitter tattoos. Seeing the smiles on children’s faces when we convince a hesitant parent to get their own glitter tattoo; is simple, yet rewarding.
Volunteering not only allows me to give back to the community but also provides me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It is a great way to break out of my comfort zone, expand my social circle, and try new things.
Volunteering with the MFRC has been a sparkling experience filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a sense of purpose. If you are looking for a way to give back and connect with others, consider volunteering in your community. You never know what meaningful moments and relationships you might find.
