10 Everyday Allyship Practices

Allyship is about showing up, listening, learning, and taking meaningful action to help create communities where everyone feels respected, valued, and included. While no one gets it right all the time, small, intentional actions can make a meaningful difference.

As members of the military community, we know that strong communities are built through connection, empathy, and support for one another. Together, we can help create spaces where everyone has the opportunity to belong and thrive.

1. Get Educated

Take time to learn about the experiences, histories, and perspectives of people from different backgrounds and communities.

Examples: Read an article, watch a documentary, follow diverse creators, or explore the meaning behind cultural traditions, identities, and lived experiences.

2. Speak Up

If you witness discrimination, exclusion, or harmful comments, respectfully challenge them and help foster a more inclusive conversation.

Examples: When it's safe to do so, challenge stereotypes, interrupt biased language, or advocate for someone whose voice isn't being heard.

3. Support

Invest your time, skills, or resources in organizations, initiatives, or causes that promote equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Examples: Volunteer, donate, shop from diverse businesses, or amplify the work of underrepresented creators and organizations.

4. Don't Assume

Avoid making assumptions about someone's identity, background, abilities, beliefs, or experiences.

Examples: Ask respectful questions, use people's preferred names and pronouns, and allow individuals to define themselves.

5. Show Up

Be present for others and help create opportunities for everyone to feel welcome and included.

Examples: Invite someone into the conversation, attend community events, check in on a colleague or friend, or recognize and celebrate important cultural observances.

6. Listen

Listen with empathy and an open mind. Seek to understand others' experiences without interrupting, minimizing, or immediately offering solutions.

Examples: Read personal stories, seek out different perspectives, and focus on understanding before responding.

7. Reflect

Examine your own assumptions, biases, and perspectives. Be open to feedback and committed to continual learning and growth.

Examples: Consider how your experiences shape your perspective, seek feedback, and remain curious about viewpoints different from your own.

8. Observe

Pay attention to how inclusive environments are created and look for opportunities to help improve them.

Examples: Notice who may be left out, identify barriers to participation, and learn from people who model allyship through their actions.

9. Use Inclusive Language

Choose respectful, inclusive language that helps everyone feel welcome, valued, and seen.

Examples: Use gender-inclusive language when appropriate, avoid stereotypes, and be mindful of how your words may affect others.

10. Be Kind

Treat everyone with respect, empathy, and compassion. Allyship is an ongoing journey, and every positive action - no matter how small - can make a meaningful difference.

Examples: Offer encouragement, celebrate others' successes, make space for everyone to participate, and extend grace as people continue learning.

Allyship isn't about being perfect - it's about being present. Every conversation, act of kindness, and willingness to learn helps create communities where everyone feels respected, valued, and included.
