Sergeant Nyron Higgins served in the Canadian Armed forces for 27 years and is this year’s posthumous recipient of the Canadian Armed Forces Hall of Fame Award. He was an athlete, coach, official, aviator, mentor and was an original member of the CAF Taekwondo team. He represented Canada at its first-ever appearance in a CISM World Military Championship in Seoul Korea in 1987, and also at four subsequent CISM Championships where he was a bronze medalist twice in both 1992 and 1994. Since the start of CAF Taekwondo in the late 1980’s and through to the 90’s, Sergeant Nyron Higgins was a CAF National champion on numerous occasions and immensely contributed to developing the CISM Taekwondo program that it is today.
Nyron was an instructor, international referee, personal mentor and guide to numerous CAF high-performance athletes. He truly embodied all that the sport of Taekwondo has to offer, and his talent was sought outside of the CAF given his many accomplishments. He was an advisor and technical sound board for Patron’s and the team from 1986-2016 prior to his passing in 2023.
We salute Retired Sergeant Nyron Higgins and honour him and his exceptional contributions to CAF Sports with the 2023 Canadian Armed Forces Hall of Fame Award.
