Returning your official passports
Did you know that official (special/green and diplomatic/red) passports are to be turned in upon completion of your OUTCAN posting, or by a dependant who is no longer at post?
A Canadian passport always remains the property of the Government of Canada, and official passports must be returned immediately after official duty is complete in order for the Department of National Defence to remain in compliance with the requirements of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. Passports will be held in safekeeping at Official Travel until required for the next official assignment.
After completing an OUTCAN, the CAF/DND member’s official passport may be stored at their new unit only if their unit has the appropriate authorization to safekeep passports. Dependant passports must be returned to Official Travel, including dependants who return to Canada early and are not at post full-time. Passports can be released from safekeeping upon request when proof of imminent travel back to post is provided along with a PPTC455 form.
Did you know that you can request to keep your passport as a souvenir?
After completing your OUTCAN posting, you may request to keep your special or diplomatic passport as a souvenir. It first must be properly cancelled in the government system. This includes passports that have expired. To be properly cancelled, a passport must be sent back to Official Travel. If a request is included to return it for keeping as a souvenir, it will be mailed back to you after cancellation.
All official passport requests require a PPTC455 form.
