The speed limit in town is 45 km/hr and 30 km/hr in school zones which is in effect 24/7 365 days of the year.

Meter violations (by-law) can be paid at City Hall, located at 4807 – 52^nd Street or online at https://www.yellowknife.ca/en/VirtualCityHall.asp.

Warning: you must have proof of residency before you can register your vehicle or get an NWT driver’s license/identification card. 

To obtain your NWT driver’s license and register your vehicle visit the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Issuing Office located on the 1^st Floor, 5015 49^th Street.

Driver’s licences are available in one, three or five year terms.

General Identification Cards (five year terms only) are also available through the same procedure at this office. For more information call (867) 873-7487 or stop by their office. 

Vehicle registration renewals are based on the first letter of the last name of the registered owner. To check out when registration is due, go to https://www.idmv.dot.gov.nt.ca/. Don’t forget to request an email reminder for your next vehicle registration. You do not have to be the registered owner of the vehicle to renew, as long as you have proof of insurance and current registration.

Tip: 

• Vehicle inspections are not required within the NWT.
