Sea Kayak Basic Training Course

Part 1 Pool Training* 19 Wing Fitness and Community Centre Pool (2 hours): 

How to make a wet exit:

Assisted rescue:

Training Details:

Bring your bathing suit & towel!

Areas of Instruction Covered:

a. Sea kayak safety briefing;
b. Roll kayak over and eject safely;
c. Roll kayak over and recover with assistance;
d. Roll kayak over, eject, and re-enter kayak with assistance; and
e. Re-enter kayak without assistance using paddle float.


Part 2 - Sea Training (approx two hours - HMCS Quadra, B72 19WCYC Clubhouse)

  1. Intro to clubhouse, kayak shed, and kayaking equipment;
  2. Kayak sign-out procedures;
  3. Safety lecture;
  4. Group sea kayak; and
  5. Kayak clean-up and return to storage procedures.


*Bring water sandals (or old runners) & sports clothing that can get wet.


Costs:

  • Effective in 2021, the tuition fee for this course has been waived;
  • All participants must be members of the club.  Please see the Membership section for the different tiers and fees; and
  • Unlimited use of kayaks (and SUPS's) require an annual fee (one fee covers a member, spouse & qualified dependents!)

**NOTE** - Everyone wishing to use Club kayaks must either successfully complete this course or be granted an exemption by the Kayak Captain or Kayak Coordinator.  Training exemptions will require documentation of previous training and experience.


How to Sign-Up:

  • For those not yet members, please complete a 19WCYC membership form & waiver. Email your membership application to the Membership Officer.  Once your application is approved, the Membership Officer will direct you how to pay your fees.
  • Training opportunities will be announced through our regular email updates.  When you find a session that you are able to take, or you have any questions about the course, please contact the Paddlesports Captain

**NOTE** - If you cannot attend your scheduled session, contact the Paddlesports Captain ASAP - Courses often fill-up and leaving an unused spot is unfair to those who may be on a waiting list!
