The Sunshine State

Exploring Florida's CAF Community

The Sunshine State is home to the third-largest collection of CAF/DND members and their families stationed in the United States. While many of our personnel are based at Tyndall Air Force Base, others are spread across various cities in Florida, including Pensacola, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Tampa, Miami, and even Key West.

No matter the city or region, you're never far from the beach or your next great adventure. In just a day's drive, you can explore the theme parks of Orlando, the relaxing beaches of Miami, or immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the Everglades.

Facing the Floridian Facts

Although beautiful, it's not always sunny in the sunshine state, especially during hurricane season, which runs from June to November. This period brings some of the biggest challenges for those stationed in the state, as families must stay prepared for extreme weather, including high winds, heavy rainfall, flooding, storm surges, rip currents, and even tornadoes. Evacuations may be necessary when there is a threat of storm surges or the potential for being cut off from essential services.

Rest assured, the local Chain of Command and Emergency Management Team closely monitor weather conditions, keeping CAF families well-informed and ready. If necessary, evacuation procedures are quickly implemented with safety as the top priority.

Tidbits about Tyndall & the Emerald Coast

Tyndall Air Force Base, situated in Northwest Florida, is best-known amongst Canadians for its ongoing role in supporting the NORAD mission alongside various other detachments across the US and Canada. Many stationed here choose to reside in the vibrant cities of Panama City or Panama City Beach, both of which are in close proximity.

Located on the stunning Emerald Coast in the Florida Panhandle, this area is renowned worldwide for its breathtaking white sand beaches that span 27 miles along the turquoise waters of the Gulf. Although it may not always be sunny in the Sunshine State, our Tyndall community recognizes that they live and work where thousands vacation every year.

Check out the fun-filled pictures below, capturing community events over the years. From city-regulated bonfires to serene yoga sessions on the beach, this community knows how to make the best of their time in Florida.
